GEN PHILIP SCHUYLER
LINE OF BATTLE PORTRAIT GALLERY

Offered here from our museum archives is the ORIGINAL 1810 Philadelphia Port Folio copper plate stipple engraving by Leney based on the Portrait Painting by John Trumbull.  Obviously, this is a very unique look at a dashing young general and founding father and worthy of the finest collection. The original engravings were published so folks around the country could see what this great hero looked and of course buy the book. This National Treasure is in absolutely pristine condition. As a side note there are wonderfully rich plate impressions that surround.

Father-in-law of fellow patriot, Alexander Hamilton , a round of huzzahs for General PHILIP SCHUYLER. Having been proved right in departing from Ticonderoga with his force intact, he began the descretion as the better part of valor strategy. Early on it was far better for the Contentals to pick the ground and time of their choosing, a plan that George Washington would have to assume for years. As a member of the Continental Congress, that August body appointed him as Major General. George Washington placed him in command of the Northern Department of New York. Schuyler was on the road preparing the Canadian campaign of 1775-76 when ill health compelled him to turn over the field command of that expedition to the British-born American general Richard Montgomery, but he continued to fight in New York. In July 1777, Schuyler was blamed for the British capture of Fort Ticonderoga, and in August he was REPLACED in command by Major General Horatio Gates. Now, who in the heck calld that SHOT?! He requested a court marshal, and was subsequently acquitted. And whoever it was who appointed Gates, was in turn, committed.

For an exceptional collection of the Revolution, others of our founding fathers and so many of those who faced the British eyeball to eyeball and a quick find of all, click on "My Store" beneath my ID and the little red star and then the Revolutionary War or Declaration of Independence section. Also, you shall find the opportunity to get what you would like without having to wait for auctions to end.

This very rare piece of our naval heritage has been very carefully archived to assure that this historic piece continues for many generations to come. The process is very complex and entails, cleaning, deacidification, and defungiciding (no foxing, which if left unchecked, is not harmful to the piece but could be very much so to you). The engraving is nearly pristine and in better condition than when first struck. Any winner assumes the role of custodial protector. Ultimately, it's our legacy which will be the winner. Image size is 2 3/4 x 4 inches not counting the text, and 5 x 8 1/2 overall. Winner to pay $10.00 s&h&i.

Please read very carefully. For an additional $60.00 winner may elect having this arrive in one of our 12 x 15 inch museum mounts (as atop) which is an antique gold hardwood frame with matching inner frame (known as a fillet). These are exorbantly expensive to have done custom made (about treble the cost), and are used for our museum endeavor. It will come with the proper hinged hanging mounts and vinyl coated wire & bumpers. All you need is a hammer or a very tough fist. Happy to do it on such an important piece of our American heritage. Available in My Store.
