The William P. Caley Collection. I have acquired an extensive private collection out of Sierra Madre, California. The collection is the William P. Caley private family and business ephemera and photographs. Included are the personal day to day journals spanning well over 60 years.
There are several hundred holiday cards, letters, Ramona Street home building details, reciepts, bank notes, family photographs, yard long photographs and a written history by then historian Maybelle Caley,William Caley's youngest daughter.
The ephemera centers in and around Sierra Madre! The day to day journal entries tell the story of the 'true' Sierra Madre as it unfolded into the little town it is today. It speaks of notables of the time, the sick, deaths, historical events in the USA, war, the old timers in town, town gossip, the Womans Club, births, weddings, recipes and so much more!
The Caley family and its women were intelligent, resilient pioneering people.
As I inventory, log and scan the collection I will then list the items. So please bookmark me. The collection is fascinating!
William P. CaleyWilliam (Bill) P. Caley was born in Cleveland Ohio June 1859. English Manx Heritage. He and Mary wed in Cleveland Ohio 1887. They celebrated their golden anniversary in Sierra Madre in 1937.
Mr. Caley was an adventurous and enterprising man. He was associated with the Cleveland Railroad under Mark Hanna and Tom Johnson.
Moved to Sierra Madre Calif in 1895. Quickly became interested in Ranching and Real Estate. In 1907 when the city of Sierra Madre incorporated Mr. Caley was the 1st Marshall, Tax Collector and Street Superintendent. He served several terms during this time and was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Los Angeles Calif.
In WWI he served 4 years as the Mail Carrier for Sierra Madre. In 1898 (note one document states that the home was built in 1896) he built the family home on 233 Ramona Sierra Madre where it still stands today. The Caley family's first home was where old city hall was. Later they moved across the street to a house which later became Safeway.
William Paul Caley purchased Richardson House, Lizzies, barns, burros, corral and other property at the foot of Mt Wilson trail with 305 feet of frontage on Mira Monte Avenue. from Richardson & Beard owners of Mt. Wilson Hotel. All was purchased for a sum of $27.75. Various changes and improvements were made. New store was built on east side in 1913.
In 1908 The Mt. Wilson and Pasadena Toll Road Co., leased from Mr. Caley for a term of 3 years the property at the foot of Mt. Wilson Trail.
Mr. Caley passed away in 1943 at the age of 84 years. He was buried in a 'Pasadena' cemetery, not in Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery.
