PAUL SWAN

1883-1972

Once hailed as "America's Leonardo" and "the most beautiful man in the world," Paul Swan began his multi-faceted career by modeling for art classes at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1900. Instructors quickly discovered his talent for drawing and arranged a scholarship. While in Chicago, he studied painting under John H. Vanderpoel (1857-1911) and sculpture under Lorado Taft (1857-1953).

His aesthetic dance performances were noticed by Diaghilev Ballet Russes star Mikhail Mordkin's (1857-1944) and became first private pupil and in London (1912). An associate of Mordkin, Andreas Pavley (1892-1931) of the Pavley-Oukrainsky Ballet, and one time Anna Palova partner also became one of Swan's most trusted mentors. Swan and Pavley held dance recitals at Swan's studio in Roland Gardens in London. On a tour that traveled three continents Swan  performed with Ted Shawn, Ruth St. Denis, and Isadora Duncan.  Critics called him  "America's most eminent exponent of classic dancing."

The song and dance team of Adele and Fred Astair had a line in one of Adele's songs, as she taunted her brother, "Don't ever think you're a Paul Swan!" Swan was spoofed by George and Ira Gershwin in their 1927 musical Funny Face: "As a Paul Swan, you are not so hot."

Swan painted and sculpted some of the twentieth century's most important figures in his studios in Stony Creek, Paris and New York City at Carnegie Hall including President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President Woodrow Wilson, Nelson Rockefellers children, Prime Minister James Ramsay MacDonald, Pope Paul VI, composers Maurice Ravel, Percy Grainger, Claude DeBussy, singer Raquel Meller, aviator Charles Lindbergh, actor John Barrymore, actress Nance O’Neil (Lizzie Borden’s reputed lover) writer Clare Booth Luce, British socialite Lady Ian Hamilton, (who was also painted by John Singer Sargent, one of Swan's favorite artists), the Duchess of Windsor, suffragette Muriel Lester, Prince Bira of Siam, Adirondack poet and Gibson Girl Jeanne Robert Foster, Willa Cather, Woodrow Wilson and Benito Mussolini.

In his old age he became an eccentric character in New York City, visited by Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, and Roberto Matta, who admired Swan's unwavering dedication to his philosophy of art and performing aesthetic dances.

Pop artist Andy Warhol took an interest in Swan in 1965 and cast him in "Camp, Paul Swan", and "Paul Swan I-IV". Callie Angell of the Whitney Museum's Warhol Film Project calls Swan "strangely impressive" in "Paul Swan", referring to Swan's determination to continue to perform at eighty-three.

Kindly pay via paypal E-check within 3 days of AUCTION close.

FLORIDA ONLY we must collect Florida sales tax of 7% for items shipped or picked up within the State of Florida.

FINE ART RETURN POLICY Returns are accepted if we are notified by you within 3 days of delivery less all shipping, ebay and paypal fees and ONLY if our written description or images are not consistent with the actual item.

We spend hours to accurately describe the artwork in detail and take 100s of photographs of each work outside in the sunlight to make sure the color is correct and all flaws are described in the text or the photographs.

The exception to the above concerns artwork under glass that has not been unframed and we can only describe and photograph what we can see and whatever perceived flaws are hidden within the framing do not qualify for a return.

Only one buyer during our 10 years on eBay has requested a return and in his case received one. Buyer’s remorse is not considered a reason for a return nor is multiple extraneous dings, surface or finish losses etc--- that are not individually described or photographed regarding the antique/vintage or new frames on the artwork or sold separately.

We want you to be happy with your purchase so please carefully read all the text, examine the photographs and email me if you have any questions or concerns before you bid. Understand that the authenticity of your purchase is guaranteed indefinitely and once you bid ---you are entering into a legally binding contract to purchase the artwork.

During our 10 years on eBay--not once has a package been damaged or lost. We are expert packers and use USPS registered mail for smaller works. If UPS is used, the work is professionally packed. But stuff happens and if USPS or UPS has damaged the box and the contents-- either you or your representative must mention this to the delivery person, get a damage receipt from them at the moment of delivery (or have them write it on the receipt you sign and their copy)  and save all the packing materials so an insurance claim can be pursued if the artwork is damaged.
