This listing is for a furled cold weather tapered monofilament flyfishing leader. After considerable testing and experimenting on fish, we have developed this premium furled leader system with a special high quality monofilament line in the optimum proportions so you will have a soft, castable and yet very strong connection to your flyline and tippet under all cold water fishing conditions. Even at sub-zero temperature, this leader has no memory (regular mono is 70 degrees). The added benefit of an extraordinary flexibility and low-memory design resist twisting and tangles. The materials used to produce this leader will also resist nicks and cuts against rough or sharp objects and the controlled stretch benefit of this leader adds fighting power - Shock Strength!

The leader color is a high visibility "electric blue" which makes it easy to see against snow or ice. A highly visible leader is a flyfisherman's "sonar" for detecting line movement which just may be the difference some days between explaining why you where "skunked" or why your the only one that is catching fish that day. Throw away the strike indicators, as they just add weight and end up an ice-ball on your line in winter. Just add any length of tippet to your new furled leader system for an overall combined leader/tippet length of 12 ft (3.6m) or more. Because this furled leader offers such an efficient transfer of power, expect to cast very long tippets and effectively turn over large or small flies.

Once you add this leader to your arsenal, you will be able to cast further and with more precision than ever before. This is simply the very best flyfishing leader for wet strength made.
Here is a simple way to determine the correct leader for your fly rod & line system.
First pick the tippet size you use from the chart below and then pick the correct leader.
|
Tippet Size
(approximate LB Test) |
LB Test Furled Leader (suggested rod size) |
|
7x (2 Lb test) |
2.5 (0-4wt rod) |
|
5x (4 Lb test) |
4.75 (0-5wt rod) |
|
4x (6 Lb test) |
6 (4-6wt rod) |
|
3x (8 Lb test) |
8 (5-7wt rod) |
|
1x (12 Lb test) |
12 (6-8wt rod) |
|
0x (14 Lb test) |
16 (6+ wt rod) |
Larger and stronger tippet sizes then these require higher pound test furled leaders.
Make sure the tippet is the same or lighter in strength than the leader.

We guarantee our leaders will exceed your expectations or your money refunded (we have never had a return).
More About Ultimate Furled Leaders
If you have never heard of or have never seen a furled leader don't feel alone. Most fly fishermen buy whatever the fly shop has in stock and are never told about the superior attributes of furled leaders. Quite simply said, after trying one, you will wonder how you ever got along without it.
The ultimate fly fishing leader is a furled leader and it will greatly improve your casting accuracy and your presentation from beginner to expert alike. Wonderfurl Leaders will build tremendous confidence the first time a beginner uses them. In the hands of a veteran fly caster you will swear you are watching the movie “A River Runs through It”.
The least understood element of a fly fisherman’s equipment is the leader. Anglers spend large sums of money on rods, reels, even flylines, but place relatively little emphasis on the element of tackle that is second only to the fly in proximity to their fish: the leader. Most flyfishermen spend less than $5 on a leader and then wonder why their aggregate system will not accomplish all the things expected of it. It makes little sense to weaken a wonderful set of equipment by forcing yourself to rely on a cheap inferior leader.

Wonderfurl leaders are knotless and will efficiently transmit the energy of the cast every time and because our furled leaders are knotless; there are fewer lump-and-bumps to get tangled up. These tapered leaders are limp enough to turn over with the slightest energy, resulting in a very accurate presentation. With their streamlined taper and spiraled profile, Wonderfurl Leaders are less affected by wind than other knotted leaders. The weight distribution of the leader mimics the transition in a tapered fly line and has the same effect, therefore aiding the leader in turning over. Energy is what moves fly line, and the efficient transfer of that energy from the rod to the line to the fly in the course of the cast is critical.
Tapered fly lines and furled leaders are more effective in transferring energy through the cast because they use thicker, heavier, and stiffer line to move, and turnover, thinner lighter and more flexible line. This helps maintain line speed and makes casting easier. The transition from a fly line that weighs several times that of the average leader material to the tippet and then the fly can be a major problem if the wrong leader is used.

Standard tapered leaders do not adequately transfer the power of the cast to the tippet and fly, often resulting in short or wayward casts, especially in windy conditions. This is not the case with Wonderfurl leaders. If the leader is unable to turn over the fly, the line is possibly hinging or has lost energy and is prematurely terminating in the collapse of the casting loop and possibly causing a tangled mess. The simplest way to minimize casting failure is to form a gradual transition to the fly. This gradual transition of the leader is best done with the Wonderfurl leader which will slow the speed of the loop until it unfolds, and often presents the fly at the end of a series of S curves on the water, allowing the fly to float without the added drag of the line. The transitional taper of the Wonderfurl leader is carefully matched to the weight of your fly line so you will slow the speed of both the fly and the leader, which means you won’t hit the water with a high impact splash. Also, the taper of the leader will slow down the fly so that it does not spin into a spiral or snap like a whip at the end of your backcast.

Ultimate Furled Leaders Are Better!
Wonderfurl leaders provide unmatched overstrike protection because of there superior elasticity. Throw those shock tippets away! Just hold the butt end in one hand and the fine tip in the other hand. Now outstretch your arms and feel the natural resiliency built into this leader. Don’t loose that really big fish of a lifetime in the last few feet of landing him when lots of pressure is applied. With other types of leaders, your tippet will usually part ways with that trophy when that much pressure is applied. This leader will absorb a lot of that energy which is not the case with standard extruded tapered leaders, knotted hand-made leaders or the "Thread style" furled leaders that some are making.
Wonderfurl leaders have been engineered to give you unparalleled performance and presentation on the water. The automated equipment we use to produce our leaders is strictly monitored during the production process. These leaders are carefully assembled to very strict tolerances which was developed and fine tuned over a span of many years. By automating what use to be a very labor intensive, hand-made operation, we have eliminated many of the inconsistent results found with other similar leaders. The staff at Wonderfurl Leaders makes thousands of leaders every year and have never had one returned for a refund or replacement! Don’t be fooled by others with inferior hand-made leaders who claim to make a quality product. Most furled leaders are tapered down only 3 times from the butt end to the tippet end. Wonderfurl Leaders have a carefully designed 5-step taper with the best line available for the very best possible transfer of power from your fly rod to the fly. Keep in mind that not all furled leaders are created equal. Others have tried to duplicate our leaders with marginal to poor results. Our biggest concern is that someone will purchase a poorly designed leader made with poor quality materials from one of our competitors and then go back to a standard leader because the furled leader fails to live up to the claims. Get a Wonderfurl Leader first and you will never use the home-made and extruded leaders again! I GUARANTEE IT OR YOUR MONEY BACK!!
Wonderfurl multifilament furled tapered leaders are superior to braided leaders. A braided leader has a hollow center core which tends to soak up water. The water-logged leader will sink and become heavy which affects casting performance. Water spray will put down your fish on the pick up of your line. Ultimate furled leaders are different because the furling is accomplished by weaving, twisting (twining) and looping almost 100 feet of premium line tightly, so it has no hollow core. In short, since furled leaders have no hollow core, they don't absorb water and therefore pick cleanly off the water. No “rooster tail” spray from this leader.
Wonderfurl leaders are also “wind knot” resistant which is not the case with standard tapered monofilament style leaders.
Wonderfurl Leaders are all-season durable.
Another important fact is that the lack of memory, kinking and curling with these leaders will reduce the drag problems that are so commonly associated with thick, stiff extruded knotless tapered leaders. Also if desired, the multifilament furled leader surface makes it easy to apply line dressing for floating or sinking because these agents adhere much better than on a smooth single-strand monofilament leader.
Unlike other leaders on the market, the loops at both ends of our leaders are intentionally made to "hand-shake" or collapse on your line to maximize the power of your cast with a non-hinging connection. The slim knotless Wonderfurl Leaders do not have a thick rigid loop that can hang up in the guides.
Wonderfurl leaders have a short extension attached to the small tippet loop of the furled leader to facilitate the easy changing of tippet material. The extension remains permanently on the furled leader so all you need do is add your tippet and a fly. Tippet material is tied to the loop on the extension rather than on the tippet-loop of the furled leader. Since tippet material is changed often, the use of an extension protects the furled leader's tippet-loop from accidental damage when cutting off old tippet.
The length of the tippet material tied to the furled leader varies according to the angler's preference, but usually is three to six feet in length. The combination of tippet material and furled leader can produce an overall length of 10 to 15 feet.
Unlike standard extruded tapered leaders, you won’t have to worry about the leader breaking at the knot as the knotless multiple strands of line at the loop will hold up to the sudden hard surges so common with larger fish. Many customers tell us about the large fish over 20 pounds that are caught on our 12 pound test furled leaders.
About the Wonderfurl 100% fluorocarbon leaders: They are soft, castable and made using the best fluorocarbon material for wet strength possible. Designed to refract light just like water, this fluorocarbon line is virtually invisible to fish because it reflects less light (glare). The less glare, the less visibility which means more fish caught. Also, the furled surface is not as prone to glare as a single strand of monofilament would be because the weave of the leader breaks up any reflected light that might be present. Another advantage of fluorocarbon leaders is their resistance to ultraviolet light degradation. Fluorocarbon is also tougher than monofilament, which is due in part to its slickness. Typically, fluorocarbon slides over rocks, obstacles and through weeds with less resistance than nylon monofilament. This reduces the amount of abrasion and weakening of the leader in those situations. Fluorocarbon is twice as heavy as water and sinks four times faster than nylon monofilament so it is the perfect solution for nymph fishermen. Wonderfurl fluorocarbon leaders just may be the difference in clear water situations in which fish are highly pressured or “line shy.” Don't loose the fish of a life time because of a weak link in your fly fishing arsenal.
"Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee!"
Wonderfurl leaders are woven tighter than other furled leaders on the market. This enhances the effectiveness of the leader by insuring you get a very strong, soft landing, quiet, powerful and superbly accurate flyfishing leader - Simply Awesome!
This is not a throw-away leader, so expect to use our leaders for many seasons. The built-in elasticity of a Wonderfurl leader creates less stress on the leader with the multiple line configuration. Less stress means the leader will last longer (you spend less money on replacement leaders). In addition, with fresh, new, quality materials and careful construction, this leader will last a minimum of four times longer than a comparable off-the-shelf leader that rarely will last a season. Even though Wonderfurl leaders cost a little more money, they actually save you money in the long run compared to standard leaders because they last so much long.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Who will benefit from using a furled leader?
Answer: Anyone that casts a fly line and wants to improve their skill level, presentation and the number of fish caught.
Question: What leader is best for my rods?
Answer: The best way to determine the proper leader to use is by matching up with the tippet you normally would attach to it. Use a maximum of 7x tippet on the 2.5# test leader, a maximum 5x tippet on the 4.75# test leader, 4x tippet on the 6# test, 3x on 8# test, 1x on 12# test, and 0x on 16# test. Basically, make sure the tippet strength is the same or not as strong as the leader. Basically, as a general guide, I would recommend 2.5# test leaders for 0-wt to 4wt rods and 4.75# test for the 3 to 5wt rods and 6# test for 5 to 8wt rods. If you go after heavier fish (8+ pounds), move up to the 12 # test or stronger leaders with stronger, heavy weight rods.
Question: Should I get the monofilament or fluorocarbon leaders?
Answer: Use the monofilament versions for dry flies and fluorocarbon for subsurface fishing with a nymph or wet fly (monofilament leaders float and fluorocarbon leaders sink). Use the 6 Lb test fluorocarbon leader when nymph fishing with light weight rods. You can also use the 4.75 Lb test monofilament leader with a split shot or a weighted fly if you prefer monofilament setup. When nymphing or wet fly fishing with fluorocarbon, go one size larger than you normally would as the fluorocarbon disappears under water and allows you to upsize just in case you snag, etc. Fluorocarbon sinks much faster than monofilament but you can add weight to the fluorocarbon leader if you decide you need to get down faster.
Question: Does the leader come with the tippet already attached?
Answer: No, but we make the leaders with a one foot extension at the tippet end of the leader so it's easy for you to attach or replace the tippet of your choice. We also make a version of this leader without the extension, but instead it has a very small metal ring at the tippet end of the furled leader so you can tie your tippet onto it. How easy is that?
Question: What is the best knot to use to tie on the tippet?
Answer: If you want a loop-to-loop connection with the leader and tippet, try using the non-slip loop knot. Others knots that work as well are the Perfection Loop, Duncan Loop, and the Surgeon's loop. The blood knot is the most popular knot for joining two sections of line together if you dislike loops. Make sure you wet your tippet knots before tightening. After assembly, use "Loon Knot Sense" or the new Cortland "Knot +" formula which locks the knot and creates a near 100% connection (available from our eBay store).
