Yixing teapots are prized by collectors all over the world. These teapots are made of Zi Sha (Purple) clay which contains natural minerals and is found exclusively in the hilly southern area of the Yixing region of China. These teapots have a fascinating history dating back to the Sung Dynasty (960 - 1279) when this special clay was first discovered. What makes an Yixing teapot unique is that the inside is never glazed. Each time the teapot is used it absorbs some of the oil and flavor from the tea. Therefore, only one type of tea should be used in each teapot. Some say that after many uses, you can brew tea in an Yixing teapot without adding any tea leaves. Some teapots will bear more than one mark, which can increase the collectible value of the teapot. As an artist's reputation expands, their teapots can become quite valuable.
