VINTAGE TURNED WOODEN PAINTED TOY SOLDIERS & CANNON

Five brightly painted vintage wooden soldiers, a wooden cannon, and a seventh piece that might be from a different set.

The soldiers are 6 5/8" tall. They all have turned wooden bases that are painted red, black painted hats and feet. Two have green painted bodies and yellow legs. Two have red painted bodies and blue legs, one of which is missing as is the same soldier's "rifle". One soldier has a yellow body and green legs. The four "rifles" that are present are simple metal nail shaped pieces that are driven into the top side of the round "hands".

The wooden part of the red and black painted cannon is 5 7/8" long with a metal piece that supports the back adding another 1 1/2" to the total length. The knob at the back of the cannon is attached to a spring and can be pulled out and released so that something could be fired such as small marbles or small wooden pieces. The interior diameter of the opening at the front end of the cannon is 3/8".

The soldiers and the cannon all show some wear from use. The soldiers' simplistic facial features are very faded on two and are no longer visible on the other three.

The seventh piece has a simple turned round head with faded features. The head is attached to the end of a blue painted wooden cylindrical shaft. The head has a turned wooden hat that is a different shape than the soldiers' wooden hats. We are speculating that the seventh piece might have been meant to be put into a larger wooden cannon out of which it could be shot. The seventh piece is 7 1/2" long and 15/16" in diameter.

There is no maker's label or mark on any of the pieces. They look similar in construction to toys made by The Toy Tinkers or possibly by the Hustler Toy Company. We are estimating the time of manufacture to be from the twenties or thirties.
