Integrating text analysis and techniques for using the actor's experience and imagination to approach performance gives this first-edition text unique relevance. Equally useful to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of acting, it addresses problems common to all actors: understanding the text, finding a viable interpretation, dealing with the language of the play, and using one's body and mind and imagination to create a fully realized performance. Exercises in expanding imagination and making choices are structured to combine text, self, and imagination, beginning with an autodrama in chapter one. Several chapters on characterization include techniques and exercises for exploring and developing character, as well as finding the life of the character both on- and off-stage. Interviews with three professional actors show the precepts of the textbook in action. Text analysis, although vital, is unusual in acting books. Here it is presented as a major theme.
