A librarian and amateur historian recounts his obsessive search for material evidence of one of colonial Britain's long-lost and forgotten vestiges of its rule over India--a 2,500-mile-long hedge, guarded by thousands of military, that was built as a custom line across India to collect the salt tax. This oppressive artifact eventually disappeared, as did accounts of it in the official records and people's memories. The author's persistence took the form of many trips to India where eventually--through the kindness of strangers--he found a small piece of the custom line.
