Available for the first time in 25 years (although now almost out of print!), this book of songs and sheet music, a collaboration between J. R. R. Tolkien and the composer Donald Swann, will delight Tolkien fans everywhere as the book to stand beside their copies of Lord of The Rings, the essays, poems and calendars. In this song book the composer Donald Swann gives Tolkien characters Bilbo, Treebeard, Sam Gamgee and Tom Bombadil tunes for their ballads of the road. Professor Tolkien approved of this and added a tune of his own, decorated the book in his own hand and added a glossary of Elvish terms and lore that appears nowhere else.

The CD contains the first recording of these songs by Swann and friend, baritone William Elvin. It reproduces the choral additions of the 2nd edition, including Bilbo's Last Song, and as an appendix, his 1977 setting of Luthien Tinuviel. Both songs are included as bonus tracks on the CD; the first features Donald accompanying himself at home on his Bluthner piano and the second with baritone Clive McCombie in a private recording. Also appearing here, for the first time in English, is Donald's introduction to the 1993 German imprint, written just before he died.

This is a work that Tolkien not only approved of, but more importantly contributed to. The Elvish Caligraphy and Material on the Elvish Language by Tolkien is exquisite. While most of the music is by Donald Swann, the main musical material for one of the songs is by Tolkien himself.

This gives some real glimpses of Tolkien's own concept of his Middle-earth and again, this material can't be found anywhere else! This is a stunning edition, worthy of the most discriminating Tolkien collections! A physical description follows...

I also do not subscribe to "grading" as frankly, grading is totally inconsistent and most of the "graders" TRULY have no clue, so I will use plain English if it is ok with you...

This stunning new edition is offered with dustjacket as issued. The book itself, is quite large, measuring roughly 12x14", is black, cloth covered hardcover with silver lettering down the spine. Both the book and cover are immaculate and the enclosed CD in the back of the book is still sealed.

Any serious collector will cherish this edition as one of their most prized of their collection. Happy hunting!

Insurance is for loss as well as damage and as a result, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend shipping domestic packages insured! Unfortunately, insurance is no longer offered by the US Post Office for international destinations.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SHIPPING TIMES:

Media Mail (once known as 4th class mail) is a special class of postage for books, music, videos and other printed media available within the US and territories. It is far less expensive than Priority Mail, but - it ..... is ........... slooowwwww!!!! Despite USPS claims of 3-9 day delivery times, media mail CAN actually take up to 3 weeks to arrive, and their tracking info is frequently not updated until it actually arrives, making that feature pretty useless! If you want it in a week or less, you are going to have to bite the bullet and pay for Priority Mail which will get it there in 2-3 working days, 99% of the time, but it is more expensive. Basically, the choice is yours, but if you choose media mail, please don't write to me in 5 days asking where your package is, because the post office will have it and most of the time, they don't have a clue! International deliveries all go by Priority Mail and usually arrive within 1-2 weeks.
