| From the Western scientific perspective acne is associated with elevated androgen hormones and their interaction with skin pore structures. Male teenagers develop more acute acne conditions due to high levels of circulating testosterone, but women can also experience acute acne conditions due to hormone imbalances particularly just before or just after menstruation. Elevated androgens bring about an increase in sebaceous gland synthesis and secretion of sebum. The pores become clogged with a combination of sebum and dirt from the environment. Cleaning by itself will not eliminate this condition. |
| According to Chinese medicine the various eczemas are an accumulation of Wind Heat with the pathogenic Wind factor coming from the exterior. The combination of Wind, Dampness and Heat attack the skin. The main cause of disease is the Dampness which is sticky, heavy and mutable. So diseases of the skin may take a long time to heal, and their presentations can go through many changes. The chronic forms of dermatitis are due to a deficiency of Blood nourishing the skin. The internal stasis of Dampness which is the main cause of this disease comes about due to Blood and Yin deficiency. The disease presentation then shifts to dryness. Wind, stagnation of Wind and dry and wet Heat all block the Blood from nourishing the skin. This leads to the chronic eczema presentations described above: skin thickening, scaling and so on. |

Dr. Ping Qi Kang (O.M.D., L.Ac.) is an internationally acclaimed doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture, and herbology. He was born into a family tradition of Chinese Medicine that stretches back to 300 years of Shanghai history. The Kang family has been famous for treating external injury, skin infections, bone and injuries and more.
Dr. Kang began studying medicine at the age of 10. At age 18 Dr. Kang entered school at Shanghai Medical University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). He spent a year in the ER and soon it was clear that in the various departments he worked his prescribed formulas consistently worked better than his peers'. As he rose to the top of each department specialty he was recognized as a Master of academics and in the clinic. This earned him promotion, at the age of 27, to Chief Medical Officer of the Department of TCM at Shanghai Hospital #1.
