Charlie Chan was the Chinese detective created by Earl Derr Biggers. There were 44 Charlie Chan movies made from 1931-1949 (actually, there were three others from 1925-1929, each with a different actor who played Chang). The last three were Warner Oland (1931-1938), Sidney Tolar (1938-1947) and Roland Winters (1947-1949). Over the life of the series, all follow a similar plot, usually one or several of Chan's children thinking they will be an asset in helping their father, solve the crime. Infact, Charlie Chan had 14 children.
PICTURED ABOVE is a copy of an original of THE REAL CHARLIE CHAN...Honolulu Detective Chang Apana with the most popular actor, Warner Oland. Written below the picture by Mr. Oland, are the following words, "To my dear friend, Charlie Chang, "the bravest of all..." with best of luck from the new "Charlie Chan" Warner Oland. Fox Studio.
The plot was inspired by the life of Chang Apana, the Honolulu Detective in the earyly 1900's, that did not rule by the gun, but by a horsewhip, being an experienced cowboy. Chang Apana was born Dec. 26, 1871 and died Dec. 8, 1933. He was of Hawaiian Chinese descent, jointed the Honolulu Police Dept as an officer and later promoted to detective. He is the officially-acknowledged inspiration of the fabled, fictional Asian detective character, Charlie Chan.
A MUST HAVE FOR ANY SERIOUS CHARLIE CHAN COLLECTOR/FAN!!!
