This installment of the "Set Your Life to Music" series from Philips is a follow-up to the extremely popular MOZART FOR MOTHERS-TO-BE, continuing with the notion that it's never too early to start listening to music. The liner notes put forward the now familiar theory that music stimulates a baby's mind and enhances and improves the child's ability to learn even in the womb, and, according to the notes, babies are particularly responsive to the music of Mozart. The selections included in this compilation certainly make it a difficult point to argue.
The collection is made up entirely of arias and songs and is comprised of some of the most brilliant vocal works ever created. The offerings range from the beautiful, sublime melodies of arias from masterworks such as 'The Marriage of Figaro' and 'Così fan tutte,' to the delightful playfulness of tunes from 'The Magic Flute,' all expertly interpreted by outstanding artists such as Sylvia McNair, Anne Sofie von Otter, and Frederica von Stade. This disc may not prove the claims made, but it will delight anyone who listens to it.
