This is a super nice... Westmoreland Glass Company marked... Hen on a Nest. It sets about 4 ¼ inches tall... 5 ½ inches long.... 4 ¼ inches wide... and appears to be in perfect condition.
Our Hen is some of the deepest... darkest... Cobalt Blue I’ve come across in a long time. I’m sure you’ve seen cobalt blue... and then you’ve seen COBALT BLUE!!!... And trust me... this is definitely the latter!!!... But the glass workers didn’t stop there!!!... They’ve lavished on this sultry dark beauty a sparkling “Peacock” Carnival Glass finish that simply “ripples” with unexpected rainbows of color. With even the slightest change in lighting... or viewing position... a completely different array of colors are there to greet the eye and dazzle the brain!!!...
This “dark lady” is marked on the inside bottom with the last mark that Westmoreland used just prior to their closing in about 1983. That’s the one where the name... “Westmoreland”... is spelled out in a circle around a large “W”. This Hen is the “split tail” style... which is nicer... harder to find... and much more desirable than the “flat tail” type that was produced by many of the other glass companies. Just a super “barn yard Lady”!!!...
The Nest for this Hen is in the “Lattice and Basket Weave” pattern... and is also in that deep Cobalt Blue... and again with that stunning Carnival Glass finish. I see the same Westmoreland mark in the center bottom of the Nest... and I also see that it’s marked on the underside with Westmoreland’s earlier “WG” mark. Some collectors prefer these “matched glass colors” for “tops and bottoms”... while others seek out those complimentary colors in their quest for Hen and Nest sets. This diversity adds interest and excitement to our glass collecting hobby... don’t you think???... This “dark blue lady”... with her matching Nest... is sure to turn some heads... when she arrives in you “hen house”!!!...
The “Hen on a Nest” was first introduced by the Westmoreland Glass Company in 1904... and the owner... Charles H. West... once remarked that the prosperity of his company was due in great part to the popularity of their line of “Animal Novelties” of which the Hen on a Nest was the leading figure. These little “covered dishes” were filled with mustard... and sold... believe it or not... by the “railroad car load”.
Several months ago a nice collection of Hens... Roosters... Cats... Horses... Ducks and more... came into our shop for sale. Some of these were in colors... and color combinations... that I’ve not seen before. We’ve sold quite a few at local auctions... out of our shop... as well as here on EBAY... but we still have many more to offer. So if you collect these “guys and gals”... stick with us... there’s more to come.
