The Strand Magazine

An Illustrated Monthly

Volumes IV - VI

Edited by George Newnes

1892-1893 - London - George Newnes Ltd

10" by 6.5", 684; 652; 724; pp

DETAILS

Three volumes of The Strand Illustrated Monthly containing the complete collection of 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' stories.

Bound in cloth with gilt lettering.

Volumes IV - VI.

Volume V includes 'The Cardboard Box', a story not collected within the first editions of 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' at the request of the author.

The popular illustrated monthly, The Strand Magazine, was founded by Sir George Newnes in 1891. It included fiction by writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells and P. G. Wodehouse. The first issue appeared in January 1891 and the last in March 1950. It was created at a time when British magazines were losing out to the interesting and lively magazines like 'Harpers' and 'Scribners'. Newnes’ idea was for a magazine that had a 'picture on every page', a good mix of fiction and non-fiction, and a price that undercut the opposition.

CONDITION

The bindings are firm. The inner hinges of Volumes V and VI are strained. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping with some loss and discolouration to the spine. Internally the pages are bright. Volume IV has spotting to the first and last couple of pages. Volumes V and VI have mild spotting and handling marks throughout. Overall the condition is very good.
