The San Francisco Examiner was acquired by William Randolph Hearst in 1887, it was his first newspaper and was the model for the landmark film Citizen Kane. Power wielding and flamboyant, the paper was Hearst's vehicle, his voice. The Examiner, coveted by the masses for its lurid sensationalism, was as important as TV is today to popular culture.
