This auction is for a print of "Centaur" by Salvador Dali from the Divine Comedy series. It is a wood engraving in color on wove paper after a watercolor. The blindstamp of the editor, J. Estrade, appears in the lower right margin. Published by Les Heures Claires, Paris. From the collection of the editor. The colored print measures 10-1/8" by 7-1/4" with overall dimensions of approximately 13" by 10-1/8". It is in excellent condition. Also included is a Certificate of Authenticity from Park West Gallery as well as an appraisal from Park West indicating the value of this piece to be $1,325 as of May, 1999.
The 101 wood engravings for the "Divine Comedy" were executed over a 14 year period from 1951 to 1964. From 1951 to 1960, Dali painted the 101 watercolors which were used as studies for the wood engravings. From 1960 to 1964, Raymond Jacquet created the more than 3,000 wood blocks which were necessary for the complete "Divine Comedy" with the participation and final approval of Salvador Dali for each of the 101 engravings.
