This handbook was printed in 1857 in Philadelphia. Given the time in which it was printed I think it is safe to say that the cover is hand tooled leather and the fly leaves are hand marbled paper. The spine of the book has a small piece missing and it is loosened from the spine. It closes with two metal clasps. The name Johann Friedrich Stack (or maybe Starf ) figures prominently in this book. It is written under the picture and the page with the red lettering. I'm pretty sure that the language in this book is German. It's possible that it is the German dialect of Pennsylvania Dutch. I'm basing this on the fact that it was printed in Philadelphia and was used in Pa. There was an assortment of papers inside that let me know that it was used in that part of the state. Given the history of the area it could likely have been used by the Amish sect. There are some illustrations but not very many. There is a small treasure tucked inside the pages from a previous owner. The little token will stay there for you to find. If you cannot find it email me and I will tell you where to look. I am not an expert in books but rather I have described what I see. If anyone who reads this has information to share I will be glad to do that. ********** Somebody who read this said that this book is a handbook for daily living on good and bad days. Based on what was shared with me I have changed the listing to read handbook instead of Bible. |
