Cdv Australian Actress Mrs Hermann Vezin

A woodburytype photograph of Mrs. Hermann Vezin, who was also known under her earlier married name Mrs. Charles Young. The photograph would have been taken in the 1870s.

Jane Thompson was born in England in about 1828, but grew up in Australia where her parents were actors. As a young actress in Australia she met British actor Charles Young and adopted his name when she made her London debut at Sadler’s Wells in London in 1857 as Julia in The Hunchback.

In the late 1850s she successfully played such Shakespearian roles as Rosalind, Desdemona, Portia and Cordelia. In 1861 she played Portia opposite American actor Edwin Booth in his London debut at the Haymarket in The Merchant of Venice.

Her second marriage in 1863 was to the American actor Hermann Vezin and they appeared together in numerous companies and theatres. Mrs. Vezin committed suicide in the early 1900s after the death of her only child.

The cdv measures just under 4 inches by 2½ inches.

Condition: Mounted on card by an amateur. Good condition. Please see picture below.
