Synopsis
In Joyce Carol Oates's twentieth novel, Little Red Garlock, the town bully, has been taunting Iris Courtney about her relationship with Jinx Fairchild. Iris is white, Jinx is black, and the two of them are close friends. Little Red persists in making rude hints about a physical relationship between them, and Jinx finally takes Little Red on in a fistfight and he accidentally kills Little Red. The novel follows the effects of this event on Iris and Jinx's friendship.
