An Old Kulango Lorhon Brass Divination Fetish Figure
Antique African Art - Tribal Sculpture - Cote d'Ivoire

Collected from the: Kulango Lorhon (Loron) peoples in north-east Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa. Also attributed to the Abron Akan, Senufo, Lobi and Gan.
Material: Brass, old lost wax casting of copper/zinc alloy
Dimensions: 4 1/8" height, 3/4" width, 1" depth
Weight: 1.9 ounces, or approximately 52 grams
Condition: Excellent. Exquisite signs of age, wear and use. Held in a private Parisian collection, the condition of this piece remains unchanged from the time of its original 1950's field acquisition. Left forearm was apparently lost at time of casting or early on through indigenous use, judging by the patination and surface condition of area. Gorgeous chocolate patina accentuated with generous brassy highlights and minute traces of calcification - splendid tiny facial features and hands on this fellow!

Tribal History
"The Kulango, numbering about 400,000 people, belong to the Volta peoples; they inhabit the north-east of Cote d'Ivoire, the prefectures south of the Lobi, east of the Jimini (Senufo) and north of the Agni and Abron (Akan), whose tributary vassals they once were. Their geographical location is also reflected in the comparatively few works of art of the Kulango, which reveal above all Akan (Abron) and Senufo (Jimini) as well as Lobi and Gan influences. The brass and bronze tradition which the Kalango stylistically share particularly with the Abron is revealed in fortune-telling and protective figurines such as were used in a different form by the Senufo as well: figures with triangular faces leaning backwards with bent knees, whose feet are shaped like plates, can be regarded as characteristic here."
