In the late 1980s, even after 50 years of performing and recording, pianist George Shearing was still going strong. One of the most impressive things about Shearing's prolific career is the variety represented in his outings, both stylistically and in his group arrangements. In addition to his famous quintet and various small groups, Shearing also cut some excellent duo albums, of which DEXTERITY (recorded at the Fujitsu-Concord Jazz Festival in Japan, 1987) is one. Shearing is joined here by bassist Neil Swainson, and the two display a tight-knit rapport on everything from the subdued intensity of the Charlie Parker-penned title cut to Jerome Kern's lovely ballad "Long Ago and Far Away."
In addition to the usual suspects--an eight-minute Duke Ellington medley and Shearing's own rightfully canonized "Lullaby of Birdland" among them--the duo throw some curveballs, like their jazzy rendition of the traditional Japanese melody "Sakura Sakura (Cherry Blossom Nova)." The presence of vocalist Ernestine Anderson, whose textured alto simmers on "As Long as I Live" and a stirringly soulful take on Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love," is an added bonus to this sophisticated, accessible set of low-key, mainstream bop.
