Calculus Without Tears - Volume 2 - Newton's Apple - direct from the author - PhD, former aerospace engineer, former high school math teacher, and currently (2005) father of a daughter in the 5th grade. Modern math and science began in the late 17th century when Newton, after watching an apple fall from a tree on his country estate, discovered gravity, discovered the laws of motion, invented calculus, and solved the mystery that had baffled the best minds for thousands of years, that is, understanding the motion of the moon, sun, planets and stars. Calculus made understanding change in nature possible and was the key that unlocked the mysteries of the physical world. How did Newton do it? First, he discovered gravity and the law of gravity, which is F=c*M*m/(r*r) (the force of gravity between two masses = a constant times the product of the masses divided by the square of the distance between them) Then, he discovered the Laws of Motion, the second of which is F=M*A (force = mass times acceleration). Now he knew how gravity affected trajectories. This was the world's first differential equation. Then, he developed calculus to solve the differential equation above. There is a hard way to solve differential equations, and an easy way. In Ch.1 we review the law of gravity, and F=MA, and in the second the easy way of solving differential equations is presented. This method uses our favorite equation, distance = velocity*time, and really, nothing else. This is computational calculus, the easy way. This is how most engineering calculus is done ! Chapters 3-5 address analytical calculus, the hard way, with the goal of solving an easy case of F=MA, when F is constant, an example is the case of a falling apple. This enables us to compute the trajectories of falling objects, and we use the same math to analyze some simple electrical circuits containing capacitors and inductors. Please Note: Calculus Without Tears comes with FREE EMAIL SUPPORT. Comments from readers of CWT Vol. 1................................. Very neat book--my 9 year old is whizzing through it by himself! You've finally answered , in a simple way some questions we had, thank you! Great. really easy for my 4th grader and myself. Fast shipping... Son saw it and wanted to cry... Now thinks it is Easy and Fun! Excellent tutoring resource! If you tutor kids, definitely buy it!!! I used the book with my 14 year old son. It was very easy to use, self explanatory; user friendly. All my brothers are scientists or computer guys, and I was challenged in that way and became an attorney. But now, in my older age (54) I am forcing myself to learn math. Have gotten through the algebra quite well, and geometry quite well. I purchased a few calculus texts, and my brothers attempted to help, but I was having a lot of trouble. Your first book was very very good. Helped me to understand a lot of things that I just didn't seem to grasp otherwise.
