1920's HUGE Apollo EPNS Silver Bride/Flower Basket~WOW

Up for your consideration is this exquisite LARGE & GORGEOUS silver EPNS  bride’s basket, or large flower basket from the Apollo collection of  Bernard  Rice’s Sons, Inc., #3622.  As shown in the information below, the Apollo stamp was used from 1920-1922.

This beautiful piece stands approximately 21” tall and the lovely reticulated (pierced) ?? design surrounds the entire basket.  The ruffled top is pleated, pierced and folded; the handle is also reticulated.

The base (which has the maker’s mark stamped underneath) has no decoration and has a diameter of 5”.  The bottom section of the basket has a diameter of 1” which flares to a top opening diameter of 3”.  The ruffled top portion measures 9” x 7”.

The basket is in very good condition for its age, with some surface scratches and scrapes.  It does need a good cleaning, as we only cleaned it lightly.  There appears to be some shadowing on the silver under the lip of the top in some areas, but could possibly be cleaned off.  One side of the handle has come away from the holder, but does not appear broken—the metal pieces that held it in place remain—don’t know why it came off.  About ½” of the second row of reticulation on the top under the handle is a little misshapen on both sides, possibly due to manufacturing (see photo #5).

Here is some info on the maker that we thought was interesting!!

Apollo Studios of New York was a division of Bernard Rice's & Sons and items marked with the Apollo stamp were made from 1920 to 1922. These pieces are usually marked only with Apollo, sometimes with Apollo Studios NY or Apollo Ovington and followed by some mold or style numbers. In 1872, the Apollo Silver Company merged with the bankrupt Redfield & Rice Co, forming Bernard Rice's Sons. They continued in business under this name until going out of business in 1958. Apollo Studios was a contemporary of Tiffany Studios and produced some of the similar type items, like desk sets, humidors and other fine pieces of brass, copper and gilded brass. Apollo Studios was mentioned in advertisements to be manufacturers of hollow ware, boudoir accessories and gift items in silver plate, chrome, goldplate and other metals. These wares were typically silver plated over copper, although not always. EPNS is electroplated nickel silver, nickel silver does not have silver in it, EPC is electroplated copper.

This elegant piece with its obvious attention to detail would be a unique treasure to own or to give as a special gift!!
