"SightSoundSigns of the French Quarter"

The French Quarter is an exciting place.  At every turn there's a Sight or a Sound or a Sign that will get your attention !

In the summer of 1994,
I moved to the French Quarter and began exploring every part of it.  I wandered the beautiful streets and took hundreds of pictures.

One of the things I noticed was that there were many, many signs there---street signs, traffic signs, public notice signs and many others.   I decided I would do a Pen and Ink Painting, depicting the landmarks and things representative of the French Quarter, while incorporating the Signs, too.

I set to work, using Pens and Colored Inks almost exclusively.*   After about 300 hours of work, I signed and dated the painting, in October, 1994.   The next step was to have it printed and the results of that, are being offered here.

*(There are some areas, where acrylic was thinned-down and used like watercolor, such as the water on the Paddle Wheeler, some of the trees and plants and in a few other areas.  But, for the most part, I used Pens and Colored Inks, one stroke at a time, which accounts for the length of time it took to complete the Original Painting.)

On the painting, in the midst of all the various signs, are French Quarter landmarks and familiar Sights, such as:

St. Louis Cathedral, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, The French Market, the Pedestrian Mall at Jackson Square, a view of Royal Street and its shops, houses and fences of the French Quarter, Beautiful Flowers on an Iron Lace Balcony, a St. Patrick's Day Leprechaun, a Paddle-Wheeler River Boat, Coffee and Beignets from Cafe Du Monde, Napoleon Bonaparte, Marie Laveau the Voodoo Queen, A King on his Throne at Mardi Gras, a minitature Mardi Gras Parade in silhouette, a Meter Maid giving a parking ticket, a Tow Truck and car being towed, The Cornstalk Hotel Fence on Royal St and  a "Red Lady" Streetcar that runs along the Riverfront.

Interspersed throughout the painting are little "surprises" and you have to look closely to see them all.   I've painted a shrimp, a fish, musical instruments, musicians, flowers, umbrellas, funny little hot-dog cart, a clown and an alligator and many other  little things
to make you Smile and remember your trips
to the Wonderful French Quarter,
in the Famed City of New Orleans.

The Print measures 20" x 24".

It will be signed and numbered, by the artist and sent in a mailing tube.

Please Note: My photos might not appear clearly on some monitors, but I assure my customers that the paper is bright white and the colors, on the print, are sharp and lively.
