Tilly And The Wall: Derek Pressnall (vocals, guitar, percussion); Kianna Alarid, Neely Jenkins (vocals, bass instrument, percussion); Nick White (piano, organ, omnichord, keyboards); Jamie Williams (percussion). Additional personnel: Trip The Light Fantastic (vocals); Mike Mogis (electric guitar, slide guitar, E-bow, Mellotron, keyboard, bass guitar); Myranda Hagemann (cello); Dan McCarthy (accordion); Ryan Fox (saxophone); Nate Walcott (trumpet); AJ Mogis (organ); Jesse McKelvey, Clint Wheeler (drums); Charlie Vinzl (bells); Clark Beechie (electronics). There's safety in numbers on Omaha, Nebraska's Tilly And The Wall's second album, in which the best songs feature the euphoric unison vocals of Kianna Alarid and Neely Jenkins as well as Jamie Williams's imaginatively percussive tap-dancing. The effect is exhilarating on songs like the breathless "Bad Education," though the band is smart enough to vary their approach with the low-key, Bright Eyes-like "Love Song" (they record for Conor Oberst's Team Love label) and the sweet, yet disturbing ballad "Coughing Colors."
Alternative Press (p.190) - "Tilly arrive with xylophone, keyboards and screaming vocals in tow, and pack BOTTOM OF BARRELS' songs to the hilt with urgent, how-many-syllables-can-we-fit-into-this-phrase vocal performances." Magnet (p.110) - "On BOTTOMS OF BARRELS, there's an awful lot going on. At any given moment...expect to hear a mixture of guitar, trumpet, keyboard, cello, xylophone and drums." CMJ (p.7) - "Layered under these ragged sing-alongs, her sharp, surefooted rhythms add a confident precision to the overall shambolic sweetness of the record."
