Ethnological and Cultural Studies
of the
SEX LIFE IN ENGLAND
This auction is for an original 1934 1ST EDITION! of "ETHNOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL STUDIES OF THE SEX LIFE IN ENGLAND ILLUSTRATED AS REVEALED IN ITS EROTIC AND OBSCENE LITERATURE AND ART " by Dr. Iwan Bloch, published by Falstaff Press, Inc. THIS IS A VERY SUGGESTIVE BOOK! As the subscription page suggests, this is rigidly restricted to MATURE STUDENTS and was privately issued by subscription to cultured adults only.
This LIMITED EDITION of Sex Life in England Illustrated edited by Richard Deniston is a collection of moderately erotic pieces of literature and art with a touch of educational respectability. It reveals an interesting investigation into the nature and art of sexuality in Mid-Nineteenth century ENGLAND. It is a literary portrayal of eroticism, revealing the sexual relations of a people, their conception of a normal sex life, as well as their perversities and abnormalities.
As for obscene and pornographic literature, it is only in recent times that an important and essential differentiation has been made between the two. The intentions of this book is to have a four-fold value and appeal: to the psychologist and psychoanalyst; to the literary critic, historian, philologist and bibliographer; to the fields of medical science, pathology, law and medical jurisprudent; and to the entire world of art which has been for so long bereft of many of the greatest erotic classics of English art and genius. Dr. Bloch's hope was to remove the shackles of prudery from English scholars, turn their attention to this important and yet so neglected field of human eroticism, and bring forth extended research in their own native countries.
According to Sigmund Freud, Bloch's studies were instrumental in the development of the anthropological approach to the theory of sexuality. Many important side-lights thus illuminate the etiology of sex perversions and perversities. No less fascinating are the chapters on the erotic art of the English in which this book expresses.
The author was a close friend of Henry Spenser Ashby, the compiler of the classic 19th-century bibliography of erotica, who gave the famed German sexologist access to his collection of English erotica and the freedom to paraphrase much of what was contained in Ashby's work. Most of what we know about Ashby is due to Bloch's biographical notes in the present volume, which is an abridgement of the original German text.

ABOUT IWAN BLOCH: Iwan Bloch, the "father of sexology", was a Berlin dermatologist of enormous erudition. He spoke several languages, including Greek and Latin and was an avid reader of historical literature. He possessed a personal library of over 40 000 books as well as an extensive collection of autographs. His many socio-cultural studies in sexology earned him an international reputation as a medical historian. (He also discovered de Sade’s manuscript of the "120 days of Sodom", which had been believed to be lost.) In 1907, Bloch proposed the new concept of a science of sexuality: Sexualwissenschaft or sexology. With his colleague Magnus Hirschfeld and others, he contributed to organizing this science, co-editing a Journal for Sexology and editing a "Comprehensive Handbook of Sexology in a Series of Monographs" (because of WWI and Bloch’s early death, only a few volumes appeared). He himself wrote the first volume on "Prostitution". He died rather unexpectedly at the age of 50.
ABOUT THE PUBLISHERS….Falstaff Press was a "private" United States publisher of risqué books and anthropological. Their first publication was Musk, Hashish and Blood in 1900. The publishing house was run by Ben and Anne Rebhuhn. On November 26, 1935, an indictment was filed naming Ben Rebhuhn, Anne Rebhuhn and Ben Raeburn as defendants, a violation of 18 USC § 334, 18 USCA § 334, in that they sent obscene matter through the mails. Shomer was called as a government witness at the May 1939 trial where the three were convicted. Their books blurred where the scholarly ended and the prurient began. Similar publishers included Panurge Press.
