LITTLE GIRL WITH BIG DOG Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890 This is a three piece children's transferware set, comprised of a cup saucer and plate, circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the cups stand 2" tall, the saucer measures about 4 1/2" in diameter and the plate measures about 5 3/8" in diameter. The decoration is transfer printed in a rich sepia or chocolate brown finished with a pearlware glaze. The set depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, standing with her arms around a huge dog (looks like a chocolate Lab or Retriever ). Little May is wearing a big hat. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies, leaving very little white space. The plate and saucer is marked with pattern number 766 and registration number 69456, registered by Charles Allerton, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little May with Dog" or "Girl with Dog". The set is in great condition with a fleabite on the bottom rim of the saucer and no chips cracks or repairs. Crude in manufacture with typical transfer imperfections original to the making of these primitive wares, including glaze ponding stilt marks and slight transfer misses. Overall glaze crazing consistent with age. The set displays beautifully. Offered as is, the set is a great example of naive and whimsical early wares! Children's aesthetic transferware in this fun pattern is highly sought after, and animal lovers and veterinarians love it. A perfect gift for the dog lover in your life! We have listed companion pieces showing the same little girl with her pets, and carrying an apronful of eggs, and other winsome transferware this week. We are always happy to combine shipping of multiple purchases. Please send us an email before the auction ends with any questions or if you would like to see additional photos. Thank you for bidding!
