You are bidding on an 8x10 black and white photograph of a Northrop F-89 Scorpion airplane.

THE F-89 SCORPION (1948)

Northrop's F-89 Scorpion was the first twin-jet, all-weather interceptor produced for the U.S. Air Force, and the first interceptor to carry atomic armament. The F-89 was America's most heavily armed fighter aircraft. The dispersion pattern provided by the wingtip rocket pods made it impossible for unfriendly aircraft to escape destruction once the Scorpion closed to rocket range. The twin rocket pods could carry 104 2.75-inch Mighty Mouse rockets which could be fired in various groups. The F-89 was a two -place interceptor powered by two Allison J-35 jet engines, had a wingspan of over 59 feet, and a top speed of 630 mph. It became the nation's principal defensive fighter along the northern approaches to the North American continent — spanning the distance from Alaska to Greenland, and remained in service for over ten years. Over 1000 of these craft were produced in model designations from the F-89A through F-89}.

  First twin-jet, all-weather interceptor.

First interceptor to carry atomic armament.

First use of honeycomb skin stiffener and laminated

plastic canopy.
