Offered to a discerning buyer, here's a unique grouping for the true Throwing Muses fan and collector on the 25th anniversary of their first recording. Includes the rare, original and guaranteed authentic first self-released EP from 1984 (Stand Up, Dirt Is On The
Floor, The Party, Santa Claus²) in original sleeve, and self-released ‘Throwing Muses’ cassette
(later known as the “Doghouse Cassette”) from 1985. Both are in very good
playable condition considering their age and fragile nature. Also included in the packet
are three promotional black and white photographs, all 8 ½” x 11”, of the
Hersh/Donelly/Narcizo/Langston lineup of 1985-87; along with various press-kit bios and press clips (both provided by the band's manager and/or record label promotional departments, and collected by the seller).
This is a No Reserve auction. The high bidder takes it.
The seller was a music journalist in Boston in the mid-1980s; the Muses, then mostly teenagers, first came to his attention (along with much of the rest of the city) shortly after moving to Cambridge from Newport, R.I. in 1985. The recordings and press kits were obtained directly either from the band or their then-manager, Ken Goes, or the promotional departments at their record labels (Sire and 4AD). The collection consists of the following:
1) 1984 self-released EP ("Blowing Fuses/Spewing Mouses Records") in paper sleeve with great self-designed black & white homemade collage design (small tear and distress flaws in sleeve, but nothing major).
2) 1985 self-released cassette ("Doghouse Cassette") including Call Me, Sinkhole, Green, Hate My Way, Vicky's Box, America/She Can't Say No, Fear, Raise the Roses, And A She-wolf After The War, Fish. Original cassette sleeve artwork. Name written on side one of cassette.
3) Black-and-white promo photo circa 1985 (same as Doghouse Cassette photo, sans color), slight wrinkle but excellent condition.
4) Black-and-white 4AD promo photo by Victoria Gable, circa 1985, excellent condition.
5) 1987 Sire Records promo photo, excellent condition.
6) Two-page band bio circa 1985, including blurbs from various critical praises (mainly from Boston publications).
7) Later band bio which consists of handwritten amendments to #6, nice photos and a collage of critical raves.
8) Two-page band bio from Sire Records, August 1987 (on the release of the first US full-length album).
9) Clip of original article from Musician magazine, 1989, 'Shooting You Between the Eyes with Inspiration," by Jim Macnie.
10) Xeroxes of 1986 UK articles from NME, Melody Maker and Sounds (part of press kit).
11) Very early packet of press clippings circa 1984.
12) Clipping of article on the Muses from the Boston Herald, including interview with Kristin, Oct. 17, 1985.
It's difficult for people who weren't there at the time to realize the impact the Muses had on music fans who had never heard anything quite like them before. Now it's time for someone else to enjoy these rare recordings and memorabilia from this wonderfully unique and artistically significant group of musicians. The seller hopes to pass this collection on to someone who will appreciate it as much as he has -- a Throwing Museum might be appropriate.
The collection will be lovingly and securely packaged and promptly shipped. Local pickup (in the Austin area) is also an option. On Nov-02-09 at 10:45:04 PST, seller added the following information:
