0.81CT. RARE MASTER CUT SINHALITE GEM

Sinhalites are found primarily from Sri Lanka and its name is derived from the old Sanskrit word for Ceylon. The chemical composition is  MgAlBO4. The crystal habit is othorhombic but rarely showing crystal forms as it is mainly found as pebbles. The hardness is 6.5 -7 and the specific gravity is 3.47-3.50. The refractive index is 1.665 - 1.712 with a birefringence of 0.038. The optical character is biaxial negative. There is distinct pleochroism from pale brown, greenish brown to dark brown. The spectral bands are observed at 493,463 and 452 nm with general absorption of the violet.
