One of the saddest losses in the world of Tejano music was the 1995 death of Selena Quintanilla, whose beautiful voice seemed poised to bring the regional style of Latin pop to the mainstream for the first time. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas, young Selena was a musical prodigy from an early age, fronting a band assembled by her father at the tender age of nine years old. When the family business failed, they relocated to Corpus Christi, where they performed wherever they could. In 1983, Selena released her first album at the age of twelve, and quickly became a local sensation. After her second album, she began to rise to national fame, dominating many Latin music awards and being signed to Capitol/EMI. Her star continued to climb, driven by her powerful, expressive voice and intelligent song choices. Unfortunately, she was murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995, ending a spectacular career tragically early.
