HOW
WOODEN SHIPS
ARE BUILT

by Cole Estep, 1918
the wooden sailing and steam ships built during WW I
an e-book on CD-R

When America entered WW I in April 1917, America's steel ship-building capacity was fully occupied building, repairing, and modernizing warships. The Emergency Fleet Board was formed and thousands of wooden ships ordered built. These ranged from small two-masted coasting schooners, up to massive 4500 ton steamers and six-masted schooners. New yards were started along every shore, traditional wooden ship-building skills were revived and new techniques were added.

This book, How Wooden Ships Are Built, A Practical Treatise on Modern American Wooden Ship Construction with a Supplement on Laying Off Wooden Vessels was published in 1918. Cole Estep, the author, was the editor of Marine Review Magazine. The text is drawn largely from articles that appeared in the Marine Review, updated and enlarged and he personally took over 150 photographs expressly for this project showing vessels in all stages of construction. In addition, there are side elevations, plan views, sectional and detail views of many of the ships built for war use. Marvelous information for the ship modeler, nautical historian, or anyone with a love and appreciation for wooden vessels!

The entire book is reproduced on this CD-R in .pdf format and can be viewed with Adobe Reader which is installed on most computers and available free on-line. Placing this book on CD-R allows me to offer it to you at the modest price of $4.95 plus $1.95 for first-class mail delivery in the United States. Delivery to international destinations by first class international mail is $4.00 (Canada $2.00). Please see my other auctions for more vintage technology books, and boat plans. Happy bidding!
