The Building of a Wooden Ship
reprint 1918

When the United States entered WW I in April 1917, all of the nation's steel shipbuilding capacity was employed in building and repairing warships. The United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation was formed to build THOUSANDS of wooden ships, steam and sail, in order to transport and sustain the million man army we were sending to France. In 1918, the Emergency Fleet Corporation published The Building of a Wooden Ship by Charles G. Davis as an orientation for new shipyard workers and to encourage more men to seek employment in the burgeoning wooden shipbuilding industry.

Heavily illustrated with clear drawings and photographs, the book describes every phase of wooden ship construction from preparing the building site and laying the keel, through raising the frames, planking, caulking, and launching the vessel.

I have reset the text in a modern, easy-to-read font. In addition to the original illustrations I have included over 100 photographs and plans from How Wooden Ships are Built, by H. Cole Estep, another 1918 book describing the production of the war emergency fleet. This a wonderful resource for ship modelers, WW I historians and wooden ship enthusiasts.

Altogether there are 87 pages laser printed on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, staple bound. I am offering this hard-to-find information for the modest price of $6.95 plus $2.50 for first class mail delivery in the US. Delivery to international destinations by first class international mail is $7.50 (Canada $3.10). Happy bidding!
