1787 Mapping of South Africa, Mozambique and the Island of Madagascar

1787 Mapping of South Africa, Mozambique and the Island of Madagascar

Offered here is a copper plate engraved map titled  Carte du Canal de Mozambique, Contenant L'Isle de Madagascar, Avec les Côtes D'Afrique . Issued in cir. 1787 as part of the atlas by Guillaume Raynal titled "Atlas de toutes les parties du globe terrestre."

An attractive map depicting Southern Africa and Madagascar

with the eastern coast reaching as far north as Mombassa in present day Kenya and showing many of the offshore islands.

The inset on the left shows the southwestern tip of Africa from St. Helen's Bay in the north to False Bay.

The Cape of Good Hope is shown at the end of the lower peninsula

A clear and clean image, issued with a vertical center fold and measuring approximately 8 3/8" high X 12 1/2" long.

There is some staining in the top left margin and light off setting along the center fold, but over all free of any major imperfections.

Guaranteed to be authentic and over two hundred and twenty years old.

More Information

Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) was engineer, mathematician and cartographer, active in Paris. He succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin as hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine in 1773 and worked as Louis XVI's official cartographer to the French Navy. As Royal Hydrographer, Bonne's principal interest lay in the production of marine charts but in cir. 1780 he provided maps for the notable atlas by Guillaume Raynal titled Atlas de toutes les parties du globe terrestre. This image comes from that publication.
