The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
This delightful collection of tales is the most widely read and appreciated medieval work, providng contemporary readers with a living, breathing picture of the middle ages. Drawing his characters from all levels of society, from knights and clergy to paupers and pastors, Chaucer presents a lively group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, who decide to pass the time in a storytelling contest. Chaucer's brilliant innovation, to have each tale suit the teller, is reflected in the rich variety of the tales, from chivalric romance to bawdy anecdote, from sermon to folktale. Now translated into modern English by Frank Ernest Hill, the tales will enchant today's readers just as they did the generations of old.
