The Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson
The father of transcendentalism, the American counterpart to European romanticism, Emerson voiced a philosophy that is truly American in its democratic ideals. Countering the notion that we must depend on the visionaries of the past in order to understand God and Nature, Emerson insisted that each individual can gain knowledge of the Divine through his or her own faculties. In his famous essays, such as "Nature" and "Self-Reliance," Emerson eloquently celebrates the powers of the individual mind to yield the greatest truths. Warning that "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds," Emerson urges people to ignore the mere opinions of others. Our edition features a worthy typographic format, recalling the beauties of the first era of the printed book.
