The Iliad by Homer
One of the two greatest epic poems ever written committed to paper the legends of the Trojan War and Odysseus' return home, which had been shared orally for generations. THe ILIAD recounts the tale of the bloody Trojan War, begun when the beautiful Helen, whose legendary face "launched a thousand ships," was carried off to Troy by Paris. The exploits of the most famous characters of Greek mythology are told here: the great warrior Achilles, the wise sage Nestor, the fiery tempered Agamemnon and his revengeful wife Clytemnestra. The text of this Easton Press volume is the poetic translation of Alexander Pope, himself a master of the form. Pope's clear, strong and majestic translation is itself one of the greatest poems of the English-speaking world.
