 ...Steve...Canon_Treasures ...On eBay Since 1999...

A personal note to visitors, prospective customers and our regular customers.
You may have noticed that we received 100% positive feedback comments, plus a
100% 5 star rating, from 100% of our auction winners so far in 2009.  These honors from our eBay Customers, we cherish!
Why then don't we show this eBay  symbol especially in light of our 2009 100% customers satisfaction record .
Simple answer: We don't currently meet eBay's sales volume quota.
We acknowledge eBay's need to satisfy their profit requirements.
But for us, finding, testing and offering above average performing used Canon Lenses on behalf of our eBay Customers is first!
We won't sell  lesser lenses just to increase sales volume. We will continue to sell only the best!

1 Out Of 20 Test This Sharp, With 1 In A 100 Cosmetics. Now You'll Know What The Pros Know!...

We find through testing, less than 5 MKI 50s yearly, showing this kind of L quality imaging performance and rarely with these cosmetics.

Many experienced Canon gear users already know that some of the earlier model Canon EF Consumer Lenses display superior optics rivaling many of Canon's L Lenses costing much more. While no Canon Consumer or Prosumer Lens matches the build quality and pedigree of an  L Lens, there are documented instances where the Imaging quality of some Canon Consumer Lens Copies*, matches the L for color contrast and sharpness.  Our tests show that this 50mm MKI Lens S/N 1091721 is one of them! ▲Above, is our  "Select Grade", Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MKI tested, like no other on eBay & one of the five uniquely sharpest MKI 50 copies* we've acquired this year for resale and with superb, 1 in a 100, cosmetics!!!

* The term "Lens Copy" here means: any single lens within the Canon EF 50 f/1.8 MKI Model Series. This is a genuine Canon Lens!

Spending thousands on a vacation? Spend an extra $50 and get this "Select Grade" MKI 50 to bring along.

EXIF Documentation More Sample Photos How We Take Our Test Photos

If the above 3 enlarged photos don't cause at least one "wow" for this MKI 50's rendering of  color  contrast & sharpness  get an eye exam, immediately!

You'll notice, that we repeat "several times" in our narrative, either the serial number of this lens or that "our test images are taken with this exact lens, by serial number, being auctioned." Why do we repeat these? To make certain you separate us from others, who reuse their same exact "sample" pictures, for any & all MKI 50s they sell. For the record, the test results of both our  Visible Spectrum Split Test Target© & sample pictures are specific to each lens we sell. The Visible Spectrum Split Test Target© test results for this lens, found below, are printed out, and this hard copy (its imaging performance pedigree) is shipped right along with this lens. It's more work to test each lens this way. But, it's the only true (and honest) way to show actual lens imaging performance that you can rely on for those once-in-a life-time, no second chance, photo ops!

Uses & Special Performance Features

I'd like to tell you just a little more about the special use qualities that makes this MK I 50mm the absolute core lens for any photographer. The primary reason you already witnessed above... its undeniable sharpness and rich colors against a $1300 L Lens. Secondly, its confirmed performance in low light. Example: This is a shot of a Fall decorative arrangement  taken 15 minutes AFTER sunset in our backyard using this exact MKI 50 copy. Isn't it a  beautiful "warm" image, with outstanding color saturation? Click [Here]. As you can see, f/1.8 is quite simply a lens aperture we can always use. Sunrise or dusk, its "honest" f/1.8 aperture beats 2.8, 3.5, 5.6 and is the difference between a successful image capture and a blurry throw away. It is compact, light weight with an extremely reliable build quality that includes a SS lens mount and a distance scale found on only Canon's best lenses. At 50mm, with a 1.6 crop factor making it an 80mm, this MK I serves as an extraordinary all purpose prime lens. Google this MKI 50 and you'll find only praise! I am continually amazed, especially, by the stills, scenics and portraits this lens regularly produces. While the servo focusing mechanisms in these earlier EF Lenses are not as "stealth silent" or as nimble as the USMs, they do have a long proven (and documented) track record of being rock solid, reliable and accurate.

Straight forward and built to last for many years of photographic life. Satisfies the most  serious amateur and even very demanding professionals. And an "f/1.8 speed leaves slower lenses above that in the dusk (dust)!"

Included with this lens are both original  front & rear lens caps and an "as new" Hoya Skylight 1B Filter, plus two new spare extra tight fitting 3rd party lens caps, made for this 52mm lens, that say "Canon", a new unpadded vinyl black pouch, a new Zeiss Lens Cloth and a new Camquip ultra thin UV optical glass UV Filter, produced in Korea by a subsidiary of Hyundai. The Camquip was used to shoot all sample pictures.

As you might have presumed, from its mtf, this lens produces respectable edge to edge sharpness.

As mentioned in the opening page,  if you have never owned this lens, it is one of the honest "must haves," as its quality & imaging performance rivals any of the new  primes offered by any resale vendor or manufacturer. And with our generous warranty, you have zero risk and everything to gain.

The primary use for this lens covers almost everything! Especially suited for portraits, group  and even scenics. With the rich colors and deep saturated hues produced by this coveted 50mm MKI, flowers of all kinds, (even weeds), can become masterpiece creations. This lens catapults the casual photographer into a league with the best! You will not see this same enthusiasm (except perhaps for the 28 prime) in any of our other lens ads as you have in this ad for this lens! I believe in it, produced commercial products with it and would choose this hands down as the single lens to carry if forced to choose, with the 28 prime f/2.8, close behind.

Our "Select Grade" MKI 50 Pricing    Generally In This Life, We Get What We Pay For

Our 100% Positive Feedback & Our 100% 5 Star Rating that our customers have honored us with, speaks to our performance, our pricing for value received, and more importantly, the uniquely superior imaging performance of our pre tested and graded lenses. Customers continue to send us photographs taken with our lenses. Those remain among our most treasured gifts. If you are buying strictly on the lowest possible price, without any interest in tangible imaging performance, then our MKI 50 "Select Grade" Lens is probably not for you. Here is an eBay link for Canon 50mm MKI & MKII lens auctions, which you may find helpful, if price is your only motivator. But, before you go, you are most welcome to stay and see how we test this lens and its imaging performance. Then, you'll have a solid reference you can use to compare. BTW, for those who want a superior performance lens and a great value, our lens is actually only about $40-$60 more than the average MKI 50 and a $1000 less (used) than the f/1.2 L. [Click To Check]  For anyone wanting to give their photography boost, here is one of the sharpest MKI 50's you will ever find and own.

The MKII VS The MKI

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MKII "Fantastic Plastic" is a great little lens, producing sharp images. If you don't care that it sounds kind of loose and sloppy, brand new, right out of the box, and if all you wish to allocate for a lens is a hundred bucks and don't plan to use it excessively, buy it. But those seeking a more substantial build quality, the MKI is the number one choice of savvy buyers. I still have the same MKI, along with several others I purchased almost 20 years ago. In addition to the proven imaging track record, for many, the SS locking lugs and distance scale, features found only on the most expensive Canon lenses are several of the other most compelling reasons to own the MKI.

Direct Comparison With The 50mm L   [Click [Here]

A prelude to your improved photography with this Canon MKI 50 Lens S/N 1091721 . You'll notice we don't take sample pictures of delicate fawns grazing, or cute kids cuddling cute puppies. Although we like all three, photographic subjects used to properly evaluate lens performance shouldn't be distracting! "Cute" will sell lenses to those that are charmed by it, but pros want to see vital imaging criteria showing lens performance, not cute.   Generally, close ups reveal lens performance strengths as well as flaws better than scenics.  If a lens does well with close ups, at all focal lengths, the scenic shots will be as good...but not the other way around. Ever notice in your camera's preview screen, how great the shot looks in its smallest size just after you have taken the picture, and then how crummy it sometimes looks later on when you see it enlarged. We included 100% enlargements taken with this lens. With few exceptions, our sample picture, were taken with this exact lens S/N 1091721. Flowers, especially Gazanias Dahlias & Daises with their near symmetrical bulls eyes, myriad colors, intensity ranges, hues and their ultra fine botanic details, provide the best "down to earth" visual lens imaging test! Our own copyrighted  Visible Spectrum Split Lens Targets do the rest. Unless you shoot a lot into the sun or take pictures of brick walls and graph paper, the 3 most important imaging criteria for most of us mortals, are sharpness, contrast & color, and this MKI 50 delivers with "flying colors"!

BTW  With the exception of cropping sizing and notations, no enhancing software was used for our sample pictures. The MKI 50 gets the credit! Also, we often test several lenses at one time, using the same cut flowers and plants for testing each lens. It maximizes the use of a beautiful flower and our expenses.

Our Lens Testing Equipment Used To Evaluate This Exact MKI 50 At Auction

The look-a- like "Lunar Landing Module" (to the left) is our $8,000 custom built "lens testing system", a unique "daylight chamber", accurately replicating natural light from sunrise to sunset. We perform the majority of our side by side lens comparison tests  in this chamber using our copyrighted lens test targets in conjunction with our strict testing protocols.

In this test chamber we discover which lens is a true performer for color, contrast and sharpness. Lenses tested in this chamber that do excel  in performance for color, contrast and sharpness are given the designation canon_treasures "certified sharp" rating. Lenses that have this same outstanding performance plus in addition are cosmetically superior are given the designation, canon_treasures "select grade". We test our lenses like no one else and you're pictures will "know" the difference!

How we take the photos you see in this ad description

Our methods for taking the photos you see in this ad description are as follows:

I currently use a Canon 50D for all test work, including our copyrighted Visible Spectrum Split Test Target shots taken inside using our modified light chamber shown above, as well as the 50D for all shots taken outside. I have an XTi as a back up. I change Canon Bodies every two years to try and stay current, while assuring my spouse, that its not just the must have toy complex governing these purchases. Right now, I have invested in 7 L lenses and 8 prosumer/consumer lenses for dedicated use as benchmark lenses for our test comparisons.

All shots inside and outside are taken using a tripod, specifically a Manfrotto #455 Tripod, And a Manfrotto141 RC Head. Because I choose to use an ISO range of 100-200; for meaningful testing, the use of a tripod is mandatory to reduce camera shake. I also shoot with the mirror locked to minimize vibration and finally the the use of a self timer to to further reduce vibration. I intend one of these days to break down and  buy a remote shutter release for the 50D.

The outside shots of the Gazanias, Dahlias, wild flowers, florists bouquets, the occasional cactus and sundry inanimate test subjects, are taken in our back yard, generally spanning 1-2 hours before sunset to 1/2 hour after sunset. The back of the yard is almost due North and I generally shoot North with the sun setting  almost always to the left side of my subjects. Click [Here] to see]

Although much is made of blurred backgrounds, "bokeh", in order to show the depth of field sharpness of the lens being tested,  I shoot between f/7.1 to f/16 to evaluate the background sharpness as well as obviously the sharpness of the subject. I have found that a blurred background is easily obtained with most lenses with a focal length of 35mm and above. The quality of background blur has been argued to death and will be for years to come, usually also by those also attempting to explain "circles of confusion". BTW, the best definition of COC I have ever read...."a dozen amateur photographers sitting around in a circle, trying to explain it".

Our ads generally provide as least one set of EXIF data verifying a great deal of the information provided above. If you have any questions regarding our tests not covered, by all means get in touch by using ask seller a question and I'll respond.

Lab Tests Using Our Copyrighted Visible Spectrum Split Test Target

" As sharp as an L lens"? See This Image Comparison & You Be The Judge!

Please [Click Here First] for a simplified explanation of this comparison.

Side By Side Against The "L"

Summary,  Plus A Direct Link Click [Here] To Our Test Equipment

Used lenses often vary in performance even within the same lens model series. Besides the variances inherent in their manufacture, no two owners treat their camera gear exactly alike. Some are meticulous, others are careless. The latter causes varying degrees of degraded lens imaging performance which most lens buyers (and sellers) can't pick up from cosmetics or a casual snapshot.  Besides MTF charts, pros & serious amateurs prefer the use of  side-by-side image comparisons with a lens of known image performance (called a benchmark lens) as an effective visual way to flush out the strengths & imaging deficiencies of any lens.

Our Lens Test    Using the Visible Spectrum Split Test Target©, on its left side, you'll see 1/2 of the image shot with the exact 50mm MK I lens S/N 1091721  in our auction...on the target's right side,  1/2 of the image taken with a $1300 50mm Canon L Lens (the benchmark lens). Compare for yourself, by clicking on this test image. See this 50 MK I' s superb color, sharpness and contrast when compared with the image produced by one of Canon' finest 50mm Professional L lenses. In contrast, see an example of a lens that failed our "bulls eye test" and was not purchased for resale.

You'll get this Exact Certified Sharp MKI 50 Lens S/N 1091721 shown  in this "test shot" comparison.

Background on  the our unique testing methods..... One of my interests, that morphed into an obsession, is having the best lenses I can afford and learning their strengths and limitations by testing them myself, rather than relying on the opinions of novices, "conflicted reviewers" who sell what they "review", or those pandering to advertisers.  BTW, we use these same test protocols for our own lenses and those we buy for our professional clients. Here also is Canon's MTF chart for this MKI 50.

Functions & Cosmetics Of This Select Grade Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 S/N 1091721

Cosmetics:   This MKI 50's glass (at both ends) and the coatings are absolutely as flawless, and sparkle as they day this MKI 50 left Canon's Utsunomiya Plant in Japan, where coincidentally the L Lenses are also made. Utsunomiya, for Honda buffs, is also where Honda's Design Headquarters are located. All lens lettering is factory bright, white and perfect. The gold plated contacts at the rear of the lens indicate care in very light use. The meticulous gentleman who owned this, and 13 other lenses I recently purchased, kept and stored every one of them in their original boxes in his camera bags, even when he was carrying them to take pictures!!! This accounts for the unusually fine cosmetics of this lens and the average condition of the outside of the box that comes with this MKI 50 and also includes the original styrofoam packing and protective factory bag.  His only other quirk was, that he "hated",  in his words, '"the bourgeois Mylar stick on "Passed Labels"' and removed them. So if you are one who values  "passed" stickers over superior optics, our "Select Grade" MKI 50 may not be for you.

All outside barrel surfaces appear pristine. Even using 3X magnification, this lens, maintains its pristine appearance. Cosmetically, this is the best I have inspected in over 100 MKI 50's The few sparse internal dust particles, far fewer than average, obviously do not affect image quality in any way. The finish on 100% of the lens barrel surfaces still has its original uniform dull factory patina, showing no polishing, further confirming its light use (or non use)! The acrylic window  shows crystal clear. Under  3X magnification however, there is a thin wisp of  a mark about the width of a paper towel fiber. It's a toss up as to whether it was that way from day one when it was manufactured. It is that innocuous.

The filter threads are sharp with no cross threading, all lens grip serrations are 360° sharp and ALL 120 focus ring serrations are equally as sharp as new. All machined SS locking lugs are sharp without any rounding, and the screw slots, sharp, as they should be with this uniquely performing Select Grade Canon EF MKI 50mm F/1.8 Prime Lens.  Functions:  Exhibits the "tightness" of a new lens, even though used. All mechanical functions from the aperture blades to the auto focus are 100% and "spot on" accurate. Even the Manual/ Auto Focus Switch is crisp with no notching what so ever, indicating little or no use of this switch.  And of course, the real world, ultimate test for lens performance...the clearly outstanding images, [Click To See] this Select Grade Canon MKI 50 produces; both on its own and when compared directly with Canon's $1300 50mm f/1.2 L Lens using our Copyrighted Visible Spectrum Split Test Targets.  If you appreciate  excellence, this MKI 50 is truly a rare find!

Our Unique Ultra Safe Method Of Packing & Shipping

Our method of preparing your lens shipment is now uniquely guaranteed to be 100% water & weatherproof!

The first on eBay to offer this!

Whether your carrier leaves our package in 3 feet of snow or 3 feet of water for a week or a month, your lens will be as dry as when we were packing it. Plus with our commercial grade packing materials, our lens is protected even if your package is dropped from a height of 20 Feet! It may sound like overkill to some, but to us, it's just one more extra safeguard that is designed to protect that wonderful Canon Lens you are looking forward to receiving from us! Some claim to have "written the book" on proper packing by plagiarizing our old packing model, but we continually re set and perform against much higher standards on behalf of our customers. The use of tissue paper and baggies with twist ties, as some do, went out with the Brownie Box Camera. Every time we get copied, we'll find a way to do it better!

Here Is An Overview Of How We Pack Your Item

We Always Use Either Brand New Uline Or USPS Flat Rate Priority Boxes

All items are heat sealed in 2 mil plastic creating two 100% weather & water proof plastic pouches & then encased in 3 layers of commercial  bubble wrap, with twice the burst strength of the regular grade, followed by an additional protective cocoon, using clear commercial grade tape. Now, the ultimate test. I took one of my own lenses, and after using the packing procedure described above (except for the box), weighted it down and submerged my packed lens for a week in a 5 gallon pail filled with water, after which I removed it from the pail of water and with it still dripping, went upstairs, and after "making sure" none of my neighbors were looking, dropped it out the front window in our guest room on to our asphalt driveway below. As I was opening the packing, I admit I had some second thoughts, but the packing held and the lens was dry, unscathed, functional and in use today. Before doing this, I did make a dry run test using a burned out 300 5200K light bulb. Hey, I may be just a tad on the compulsive side, but not totally crazy! One of my neighbors, whose also a fishing buddy, saw me do all this from his porch and definitely thinks otherwise. Next time, I'll do it at night!

Read This & You'll Know Why Our Customers Have Honored Us With A 100% 5 Star Rating

Professional lens testing always shares equal importance with business ethics!

We use documented image performance results, not "unproven sales pitch claims," or unrepresentative "sample pictures" with a lens different than the one being auctioned.

Our ad descriptions inform with provable facts, not lure with, unverifiable fiction.

PLUS!  We always do for our regular and new customers like you, what very few, (if any) sellers do on on eBay. Below, we provide you with an eBay Auction Link showing the completed auction prices for this exact same item. For most of us, nothing is more discouraging than finding out later that we could have bought the exact same item on eBay from another vendor for substantially less money than we paid. This happens on eBay to those who forget to check eBay's completed auction price feature or to newbies who don't know this feature even exists.  Here's the eBay link for recent completed eBay auction transactions for this same model MKI 50

*

We offer this complete "transparency", so that with our printed lens test target results, and this pricing link, you'll have proof of both the imaging performance of the exact Canon Lens S/N 1091721 you'll receive, and actual current market pricing for this model lens. We also do it to establish mutual trust, so that you know if we make a statement, it is truthful! You may pay more for one of our  "Select Grade" "Certified Sharp" or "V Sharp", Lenses, but we guarantee you'll get it back in image performance, with every single picture you take with one!

An intelligent way to sell a lens ... An even more intelligent way to buy one!

New to eBay? Here's a Guide that will make you a smart bidder, entitled appropriately,  ["Be The Smart Bidder"]!

Thank you for joining us... Steve, Canon_Treasures, on eBay since 1999.

How we acquire the best lenses for resale

A question asked regularly is, "where do you buy the lenses you resell"?  And, "how is it you always seem to get the unusually good ones"? I thought an expanded answer to this question might be helpful to new eBay Buyers & perhaps even of interest to some curious resellers. Answer...Until 6 months ago, we bought about 70% of our Canon Gear for resale on eBay & 30% at Camera Shows and local brick & mortar auctions. Today, we buy almost exclusively at these shows and auctions, where we can always run a quick imaging field test on any lens, before we buy it for resale. Our final 2 hour screening tests are then run in our photo testing lab, where each lens is graded according to its performance and then offered for resale.

We have stopped, temporarily at least, buying any significant quantities of Canon Gear on eBay for resale. The reason? During the last 6 months, the quality of used Canon Gear and accuracy of ad descriptions has deteriorated  dramatically, NOT from regular, weekly eBay Canon Gear Resellers, but from the wave of new "casual" sellers now turning up on eBay. For every 10 Canon Items, we were buying from these casual sellers; we returned 5-6 for "significantly not as advertised", about a 60% transaction failure rate!  In conversations with other regular eBay Resellers, there is consensus, that the economic downturn has spawned an increase of inexperienced or first time sellers. Many, instead of trying to build an eBay business as most usually tried to do in the past, now seem to be just looking to make a few quick bucks, by offering items that are often grossly misrepresented in their ad descriptions, and in the case of photo gear, often both misrepresented and untested! Conclusion: This unfortunate trend makes a strong case for buying from "regular eBay Sellers" who are knowledgeable in and take responsibility for, what they sell! I am finishing up an eBay Guide addressing this point, to try and help both new eBay Buyers and new eBay Sellers, avoid unsuccessful eBay transactions, during these unusually tentative economic times. Steve

We use our copyrighted,  Visible Spectrum Split Test Target, other inanimate targets,  flowers and seasonal arrangements to test different lenses.

*

How is it that both sides of our "bulls eye" lens test targets look the same and some of our sample pics for different lenses look the same?
Short Answer ............"They absolutely should"............  Here's why:

*

Our  same Visible Spectrum Split Test Target© design is used to test different lenses.  If a lens does not test perfectly for color contrast and sharpness, the left side of the target taken with the lens being tested will NOT match the right side taken by our benchmark L test lens. If this mismatch occurs, we don't purchase this "failed lens". In our ads then, you will only see lenses that pass, and therefore test targets with a right and left half that match exactly.  For an example of our lens test target that revealed a deficient lens and one that we did not buy for resale [Click [Here].

*

Our live test target flowers & plants used for our sample pics, are taken only after the lens passes the above test.  These flowers and plants are seasonal, or have short life spans like cut flowers. Therefore, we will often test up to three or four lenses in one session  using the same floral arrangement, seasonal arrangement or plant (usually a cactus). This optimizes flowers & plants in perfect bloom (and our budget)..

*

We go one step further. In every ad description we "validate" at least one set of these sample pictures.  We do this by  including a set of EXIF data, which is an embedded "finger print" of the actual  image information contained in every one of our sample pictures. This EXIF data shows the exact time and date of every sample picture taken and includes additional information. Click [Here] for an example.
So, if you were to compare the EXIF data of the sample pictures that " look the same", you would find that each of these sample pictures, were taken at uniquely different times with the different lenses being tested.

*

We take great pride in our testing methods.  Not one single lens has ever been returned for failing to meet imaging performance. ...steve...
