AUTHENTIC KWAKWAKA'WAKW THUNDERBIRD AND EAGLE

Dimensions: Length: 10 1/2 Inches, Width: 5 1/2 Inches, Depth: 2 1/4 Inch

Carved from beautiful straight-grained red cedar, this mask, by Tim Alfred, was produced without the use of power tools. The lines, which are completely carved, are deep and the mask has been adorned with traditional cedar bark hair. Sandpaper was not utilized in smoothing the mask; instead Tim has knife-finished the piece. Tim has signed the back of the mask and I will provide a copy of his biography to the winning bidder. Shipping: Canada $13.00 USD, United States $16.00 USD.

Tim Alfred

Affiliation: Kwakwaka’wakw
Birth Date: 1967
Birth Place: Alert Bay, British Columbia

Tim Alfred was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia in 1967 and moved to the village of Fort Rupert in 1985. His family tree includes the bands of Kwaguilth (Fort Rupert), Namgis (Alert Bay), Mumtagila (Etsekin), Mamalelegala (Village Island) and Tlowitsis (Turnor Island).

In 1989, at a memorial potlatch for his brother, his mother’s family placed him in the family's chief position at the Bighouse in Alert Bay where he received the name "Mus-cum-tsi", which symbolizes the four clans of the Kwakwaka'wakw nation.

Tim first started carving in the world-renowned Kwakiutl style at the age of 20 and was highly inspired and influenced by the work of well-known artists such as Stan Hunt, Wayne Alfred, Beau Dick and Calvin Hunt. As a young artist he was able to learn techniques for making bentwood boxes, planks from cedar logs, mask carving, paddles, model canoes and the making of dance regalia for traditional use in the bighouse.

Some of his other projects include two drums and twenty paddles he made for the Fort Rupert elementary school in 1998. He as also done charity work for memorial trophies and made donations to various fund raising events in his community, including the auction to benefit the reconstruction of the Alert Bay Bighouse. His work sells in many galleries including sales to museums in Alert Bay and Victoria.

Thunderbird

In the time long ago, it is said that animals shared many of the same qualities as people. Once a giant killer whale ate all the salmon in the ocean. Humans began to starve. Although the chiefs begged the whale to leave, it repeatedly mocked them. Finally, a congress of the greatest chiefs was convened. After a time, a great wind blew in from the sea and lightning flashed, thunder roared. The chiefs felt the presence of a great invisible spirit. "If I were to help you, what will you do for me?” the spirit asked. The chiefs promised, for all time, to reproduce the spirits likeness as a sign of admiration and respect. Thus, satisfied with their promises, Thunderbird appeared. He was an enormous manifestation with lightning flashing from his pointed talons and thunder rolling from his sun-blocking wings. Snatching up the Killer Whale the raptor spirit dropped it into the land where it solidified into a mountain. Native carvers have kept their word ever since.
