An idea to perhaps help people identify the LVS vs HVS types without
risking damage...

Power the "unknown" GPS from 5V (or posibly 3V, if there is a
version that uses that voltage) and look for serial activity, even
with no satellite fix the serial port will spit out data.  If so, it
is a LVS (3.3 to 6V) type.

If no data, or it's garbled, try a 1/4 amp limited 9V feed, if it
bursts into life, it is a HVS (8 to 40V) type.
