Here is a wonderful little hand-blown glass museum reproduction from Jordan in the mid-1980s: a small ewer with a delicate little handle. It is representative of the vessels used in religious rituals, especially votive offerings of oil and perfumes. It stands about 3" high with a 1.5" diameter reservoir. Minerals were included in the glass to simulate the condition of a long-buried glass artifact, and it perfectly mimics the surface oxidation of truly ancient glass articles. This example is representative of small glassware made during the Roman Occupation period. There is a penciled museum shop stock number on the bottom. (rep1002) ABOUT PETRA (from the ancient Greek "cleft in the rock"): The ancient Nabatean city that is carved out of the rock hills in the Wadi Araba below the southern end of the Dead Sea. The Nabateans constructed it as their capital city around 100 BC, although there is evidence that it was settled as early as 1500 BC. Its ruins lie in the narrow valley of Wadi Musa ("Valley of Moses"). Petra was largely unknown to the West until it was visited and described by orientalist Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. It was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
