Album notes
Personnel includes: Jonathan Richman (vocals, guitar); John Girton (saxophone); Joseph Marc (piano); Ned Claflin (organ, background vocals); Jim Washburn (6-string bass); Scot Woodland (congas); Tom Nelson, Dave Terry (background vocals).
Recorded at J.G. Sounds, Grass Valley, California. Includes liner notes by Brennan Totten.
This is Jonathan Richman's most "band" album since he recorded JONATHAN GOES COUNTRY with The Skeletons. Whether he was motivated to create a less-idiosyncratic entry point for his work or if it was just a whim, it's hard to say--though it's probably the latter (since, as the album's title says, Richman has always followed his own true beliefs). His love of Spanish music (heard in full flower on his previous release, JONATHAN, TE VAS A EMOCIONAR!) is further explored with his cover of "Amorcito Corazon."
In fact, Richman tackles a handful of covers, including Tom Waits' "The Heart of Saturday Night" and Sam Cooke's "Nothing Can Change This Love." The title song, "Let Her Go Into The Darkness," "City Vs. Country," and "To Hide A Little Thought" are four more original slices of truth and beauty. Far from repeating himself, Jonathan Richman continues to find thrilling and fresh ways to address the same subjects of love, faith and magic.

Editorial reviews
...his attempts at childish whimsy sound forced, and emotional complexities seem beyond his reach, making this monotonous and insubstantial... - Rating: C-
Entertainment Weekly  (05/19/1995)

...Jonathan is still audaciously sincere in his tales of homely wisdom and childlike delight....This is his strongest collection in a while, with keyboards more prominent than at any time since Jerry Harrison's departure...
