THE MARKETPLACE GUIDE TO OAK FURNITURE: STYLES & VALUES by Peter S. Blundell, Collector’s Books, KY, 1980.

Noting that “oak” is a generic term for this book’s purposes—and includes elm and ash woods—the author states that “this book is aimed at filling a void in our historical mosaic; and deals with that era of industrial revolution that saw furniture making evolve from a hand skill into an almost totally, mechanized task. This era has been largely overlooked in the past because of general opinions about later furniture which did not allow it a place in the world of antiques. Magazines of the 1930’s considered the collection in these pages to be merely “used furniture.” More recently it has been branded “commercial furniture” by the people who have been greatly influenced by the 1930’s way of thinking. Large numbers of respected professionals, both on the curatorial side and the dealing side, agreed that the subject of “oak furniture” was definitely not for examination by scholars of antiques.”

This book reflects the truth that oak furniture is collected, bought and sold on the antique markets and that a discussion of designs and styles is therefore most useful. Here is a book for anyone planning to collect, restore, buy, sell, or arrange decorative settings for antique oak furniture.

8.5” x 11.25” imprinted hardback in very good condition. 125 pages.
