This excellent source book and guide for collectors,   IDENTIFYING ANTIQUE PAPERWEIGHTS--LAMPWORK   by George N. Kulles, Paperweight Press, Santa Cruz, CA, 1987, is a companion volume to a previous publication about millefiori designs on paperweights by the same author.

This book provides technical information about manufacturers and their methods amidst illustrations of “the most commonly found lampwork flowers, fruit and animals….Line drawings on every page and color photographs clearly illustrate determining characteristics….Kulles describes and compares design features such as color grounds, air rings, torsades, garlands, swirls and spokes. He also provides valuable information about paperweight densities that can be helpful in determining the origin of a particular piece.” A charming portfolio of color photos in the mid-section of the book relates specific designs to makers such as Baccarat, Saint Louis, Clichy, Gillinder, Mount Washington, Millville, Bohemian, and others, some of undetermined origin. Here is a primary source for collectors of paperweights or for admirers of the beautiful and useful productions of the best of the Western world’s glass manufactories.
