Recorded at Hansa Studios, Berlin, Germany in October 1982 & April 1983; Brittania Row, London, England in August 1983.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Originally released as two separate albums, this repackaging perfectly defines the transcendent ethos of Australia's premier crash and burn poets of noise. Fronted by a young, fierce Nick Cave, long before his days as a refined gothic balladeer, The Birthday Party plays savage, chaotic music beautiful enough to rip souls out by their roots. Cave performs here like a man possessed, his uncontainable lyrical and vocal energies careening between demonic and angelic while the band plays behind him as though the world is spinning out of control.
From the shattering explosion of "Sonny's Burning" through the dirge-like journey of "Deep In The Woods" and the breathless fever-dream narrative of "Mutiny In Heaven" (one of Cave's finest early moments), this vintage Birthday Party material rushes in and takes no prisoners. Recommended for Cave fans and for those who appreciate intense and challenging music.
