Though his initial splash with New York's art world in the 1960s was most notable for its whimsical anti-canonical sloganeering and Dada-inspired protest, Henry Flynt's remarkably hydra-headed approach evolved from the interstices of minimalist composition, concept art, and political protest--having far-reaching consequences on much multidisciplinary art of the `70s and beyond. But the most forthright reflection of Flynt's Vietnam-era protest music came in the form of the Insurrections, a short-lived garage rock group he formed after taking guitar lessons from Velvet Underground front man Lou Reed. Culled from archival tapes recorded in 1966, I DON'T WANNA combines Flynt's itinerant rural influences--the folksy twang of country blues--with the amphetamine-soaked atonality of early-Velvets albums. On the draft-dodging rallying cry, "I Don't Wanna," Flynt's nasal vocals, combined with the band's twitchy swamp blues-style chug, recalls both Roxy Erickson and the Cramps in all its dramatics. While seemingly out of step with the rest of his more avant-garde oeuvre, I DON'T WANNA is a crucial look into an important but little-documented aspect of Flynt's long-running and influential career.
