After making his recording debut at the age of 49, Johnny Dowd followed it up two years later with this 1999 album. The 15 songs in this musical cavalcade look at the darker side of love and loss. Menace and mystery abounds, backwoods country is mixed with surrealist cabaret, and circus loopiness with rootsy swamp grooves. Dowd's small ensemble creates a rich, multi-layered cacophony. The singer's deep, cracked vocals are in contrast to the high, clear singing of Kim Sherwood-Caso, who adds an alluring but vaguely creepy bearing to the proceedings. The earthy poetics of Hank Williams's title song are an apt reference for Dowd's own writing; his "Worried Mind" even quotes from Williams's "Jambalaya." This music is completely removed from the time and place in which it was created--PICTURES FROM LIFE'S OTHER SIDE has one foot in the 19th century, and the other in the 21st. Hypnotic and compelling, Johnny Dowd is an artist of singular rarity.
