ARTISTIC AMERICA, TIFFANY GLASS, AND ART NOUVEAU by Samuel Bing, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, Cambridge, MA, 1970.

This is an anthology of the writings of Samuel Bing, an enhanced presentation of his French-language essays of 1895, most of which were written for the French government and concerned his notes on American art and architecture. These would emerge as an introduction and art manifesto of Art Nouveau and Modernism. “Samuel Bing was a Parisian art dealer whose Salon de l’Art Nouveau not only gave the name but was pivotal to the movement that generated an international style. The essays include Artistic America… translated for the first time by Benita Eisler, an article on “Louis C. Tiffany’s Colored Glass Work,” and two articles on “L’Art Nouveau.” A devoted japoniste, Bing sought to bring about a renaissance in interior design and the decorative arts. He championed young craftsmen and artist-decorators and encouraged them to break away from prescribed formulas. Bing’s patronage, his articles on Art Nouveau, and the displays of furniture, tapestry, and glass (he was the sole distributor of Tiffany glass in Europe) gave impetus to and provided direction for the cultural tendencies of his time.” A splendid essay by Art Nouveau expert Robert Koch launches this anthology while a good general index for handy reference rounds it out. Anyone who needs to understand the principles of modern interior decoration, their relation to Modern architecture (Richardson, Sullivan) or who can benefit from the look at industrial design and the applied arts as they relate to painting and other arts, will find this conscientiously illustrated and accurately translated set of essays an inspirational source and an essential volume for the reference library.
