COPPER ENGRAVINGS -Each group below contains four early engraving with objects of art & science on a page from an early book, "The Cyclopedia; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature" by Abraham Rees; Samuel Bradford and Murray, Fairman and Co; Philadelphia: circa 1820-no date on the title page-a photo copy of which is included, 1st American edition, each is approximately 8"X11" overall size, 6 1/4"X8 1/2" image size. Attractively laid out; they would look great in an office or den when framed. Copper plate engravings are desirable because, unlike steel engravings, there are a smaller number of strikings that can be obtained from a copper plate since copper is much softer than steel.

12) JOHN T. RAYMOND AS COL. SELLERS IN "THE GILDED AGE"Portrait of John T. Raymond as Col. Sellers in Mark Twain's, "The Gilded Age". John T. Raymond, born in Buffalo, New York, April 5, 1836; died in Evansville, Indiana, April 10 , 1887. Raymond made his first acting appearance on June 27 , 1853, at the Rochester Theatre as Lopez in " The Honeymoon." Mr. Raymond's greatest success was achieved in 1874, when he brought out at the Park theatre "The Gilded Age." In this he took the part of Colonel Mulberry Sellers, which he rendered peculiarly his own, and in which he delighted thousands by the original character of his humor. He went to England on a professional engagement in 1880, but his character of Colonel Sellers did not prove popular and he soon returned. He appeared on the stage for the last time in Hopkinsville, Kentucky Though Mr. Raymond's talent as a comedian was not of the highest order, it was of such a peculiar character as to secure him success. 13) AGNES BOOTH AS MRS RALSTON IN "JIM THE PENMAN" Portrait of Agnes Booth as Mrs. Ralston in "Jim the Penman. Agnes Booth (1843-1910) Born in Australia, Marian Agnes Land Rookes, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1858. She first gained a reputation as Hermione in "The Winter's Tale" in 1860, at Maguire's Opera House in San Francisco. The second wife and widow of Harry Perry, she married the famous actor Junius Brutus Booth Jr., who was then manager of the Boston Theatre Company, in 1867. In the 1870s Booth toured as a star and her performance in Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" was a great success. In the late 1870s she was the leading lady at the Park Theatre and in the 80s at the Madison Square Theatre. The actress was known for her eloquent facial expressions: she could rivet the attention of an audience during several minutes of silence, simply by the play of her features. Although her husband died in 1883, she did not retire from the stage until 1897, at age 53. Click here to see a scan of this print.
14) ROSE COGHLAN AS LADY TEASLE IN THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL - Portrait of Rose Coghlan as Lady Teazle in "The School for Scandal". Rose Coghlan (1853-1932) Rose Coghlan was an Irish stage and film actress. She arrived in the U.S. in 1871. Coghlan was well known as Countess Zicka in "Diplomacy" and Stephanie in "Forget-me-not." She performed with the Wallack Company until it disbanded in 1888. 15) MRS FLORENCE AS THE WIDOW GILFLORY IN "THE MIGHTY DOLLAR"- Portrait of Mrs. Florence as the widow of the Late General Gilflory in "The Mighty Dollar". Malvina Pray (aka Mrs. William Jermyn Florence) (1831-1906). Formerly Mrs. Malvina [Pray] Littell, the actress began as a dancer for Wallack's Theater. In 1853 she married the actor William Florence and boosted his career. Mr. and Mrs. Florence appeared together at the National Theater in New York. 16) JOHN L. TOOLE AS PAUL FRY - Portrait of John L. Toole as Paul Pry. John L. Toole (1832-1906) John Laurence Toole was an English actor and comedian. He performed at the Adelphi Theatre in London from 1858 to 1870. Toole opened the "Entertainment Stage" in 1889. He was a great friend of Sir Henry Irvin. A talented comedic actor, Toole was mentioned on par with the likes of Liston, Burton, Clarke, and Jefferson--other comedian actors of the era. Click here to see a scan of this print.
17) GEORGE FREDERICK COOKE AS RICHARD III - Portrait of George Frederic Cooke as Richard III. George Frederick Cooke (1756-1811). English actor George Frederick Cooke was born in London, and made his first appearance on the stage in Brentford at the age of twenty as Dumont in Jane Shore. His first London appearance was at the Haymarket in 1778, but it was not until 1794 in Dublin, as Othello, that he attained high rank in his profession. In 1801 he appeared in London as Richard III, Iago, Shylock and Sir Giles Overreach, and became the rival of Kemble, with whom, however, and with Mrs. Siddons, he acted from 1803. His intemperate habits unfortunately grew more and more notorious, and on at least one occasion the curtain had to be rung down owing to the audience hissing his drunken condition. He visited the United States in 1810, and died in New York on the 26th of September 1811. A monument to his memory was erected in St. Paul's churchyard by Edmund Kean. 18) MADAME ADELAIDE RISTORI AS LADY MACBETH - Portrait of Adelaide Ristori as Lady Macbeth. Adelaide Ristori (1822-1906) Adelaide Ristori was an Italian actress. The daughter of strolling players she began acting at age four. At fourteen she had her first success as Francesca da Rimini. The actress married Marquis Capranica Del Grillo in 1846. In 1866 she made the first of four visits to the U.S., where she was especially well received in Giacometti's "Elizabeth." Ristori retired in 1885. Her favorite roles were Mary Stuart, Elizabeth I, Phaedra and Lady Macbeth which is the portrait you are bidding on. Click here to see a scan of this print.

23) (PORT OF ANTWERP - Late 1800's Port Regulations Sheet - W. S. Bailey - Bailey & Leetham Company) Ship document on the Port of Antwerp, Auguste Andre, Sworn Ship-Broker. Document approximately 17"x11" folded into four sheets. Page 1 lists the rules all vessels entering the Port of Antwerp must follow; Page 2 lists the Rates of Pilotage (Summer & Winter Rates) and Proforma account of Port-Charges; Page 3 is blank; Page 4 has handwritten statement, "Port Regulations at Antwerp". Document is embossed with the stamp of W. S. Bailey. A partnership was formed in 1854 between William Bailey and William Leetham to operate cargo and passenger services from Hull to Baltic ports. In 1864 services were expanded to Lisbon, Capetown and Portuguese African colonies. A Portuguese subsidiary company (Empreza Luzitana) was formed to operate this service and the ships were registered as owned by Bailey & Co, Lisbon. A brief service from Lisbon to the Azores operated until 1871. In 1881 the African contract was terminated by the Portuguese Government and the ships on this route reverted to the Hull - Baltic service. By 1871 ships were operating from London and Newcastle as well as Hull and the Hull - Lisbon route was extended to cover Mediterranean and occasional voyages to India after the opening of the Suez Canal. In 1881, Gee & Co, Hull were taken over by Bailey & Leetham together with their fleet of six ships. Intense competition in the Baltic, Scandinavian and North Sea trades took place in the early years of the 20th century, most competition coming from DFDS, Copenhagen and Thos. Wilson , Sons & Co, Hull and in 1903 Bailey & Wilson Ltd was taken over by Thos. Wilson & Sons and 23 ships were transferred to Wilson Line.
