STORIES AND SONGS FOR LITTLE CHILDREN is one of many collections of Pete Seeger's folk songs for children, but from the charming artwork to its kid-friendly short running length--nine songs in 37 minutes, perfect for childlike attention spans--it's one of the few that feels like an album you'd actually play for or give to a child. The songs, from the traditional "Skip to My Lou" and a rousing "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain" to a couple of original Seeger compositions, are treated not as children's folk songs, but as folk songs suitable for children. For example, the traditional folk ballad "Frog Went a-Courtin'" includes the rather gory ending often eliminated from kiddie versions. All told, STORIES AND SONGS FOR LITTLE CHILDREN is one of those extremely rare children's albums that's likely to please adults as well.
